The experiment was conducted during November, 2012 to March, 2013 at Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur to develop onion variety of white colour with respect to yield, keeping quality and tolerant to purple blotch disease. Bulbs of BARI onion-1, BARI onion-4, BARI onion-5, ON0064 and ON0071 (white) were employed in this study. The possible crosses were ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-1, ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-4 and ♀ON0071 X ♂ON0064. The higher seed yield was obtained from ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-1 (30g) and ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-4 (30g). The lower seed yield was obtained from ♀ON0071 X ♂ON0064. The seeds were stored for bulb production.

Variety and Species
To develop onion variety (s) of white colour with good keeping quality and tolerant to purple blotch disease by random matting.
The trial was conducted during rabi season of 2012-2013 at Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur by using onion variety BARI Onion -1 (winter), BARI Onion -4 (winter), line ON0064 and ON0071(White) with no replication. The onion line ON0071 was considered as female parent while BARI Onion-1, BARI Onion-4 and ON0064 were used as male parents. The crop was fertilized with 5 t/ha of cow dung and with N115P55K75S20Zn4B1.5Mo1kg/ha. The entire amount of cow dung P, S, B, Zn, Mo, ¼ N and ¼ K was applied during land preparation. The rest N was applied in three equal splits at 30, and 50 and 70 days after planting (DAP). The rest K was applied in three equal splits at 30, 50 and 70 DAP. Uniform sized (20g) bulbs of BARI Onion -1, BARI Onion -4 and ON0064 were planted in one row and ON0071 (white) were planted in another row on November 03, 2012 maintaining a spacing of 50 cm from plant to plant. Intercultural operations such as weeding, irrigation etc. were done as and when needed. As soon as the first flower opened, Paired plot (BARI Onion -1 with ON0071, BARI Onion-4 with ON0071and ON0064 with ON0071) were netted for avoiding cross pollination. After bursting of umbel, the umbels within a net were rubbed each other for a couple of days to ensure pollination. Matured seeds of selected umbels (ON0071) were harvested on March 29, 2013. Parental characters of different varieties and lines of onion are furnished below in Table 1.

The higher seed yield was obtained from ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-1 (30g) and ♀ON0071 X ♂BARI Onion-4 (30g). The lower seed yield was obtained from ♀ON0071 X ♂ON0064 (10g). The seeds were stored for bulb production. Collected seeds from each cross combinations were stored in deep freeze for bulb production in the forth coming rabi season.
