The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Sub-Centre, BARI, Faridpur during rabi season, 2012-13 to develop breeding line(s) from two local cultivars Taherpuri and Sukhsagor. It was a non-replicated trial. The isolated bulbs of desired sizes and shapes (round/flat/glove/broad elliptical/spindle) were planted and selfed as well as their OP seeds were also produced. The collected seeds were harvested and stored separately. The maximum number of selfed seeds was obtained from Sukhsagor globe (367.90) and minimum number from Taherpuri round (52.28). Among the cultivars, highest open pollinated seeds were obtained from Sukhsagor broad elliptic (3.60 g) and lowest OP seeds were obtained from Taherpuri round (1.47g). The seeds will be used for bulb production in the next year.

Variety and Species
To develop breeding line(s) from two local cultivars Taherpuri and Sukhsagor.
The experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2012-2013 at Spices Research Sub-centre, Faridpur to develop breeding line(s) from two local cultivars Taherpuri and Sukhsagor. The experimental field belongs to high land of Low Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ 12) with clay loam in texture and 7.6-8.1 soil PH. In addition to 5 t/ha of cowdung the land was fertilized with N120P54K75S20 kg /ha. Two different shapes of Taherpuri (flat & round) and three different shapes of Sukhsagor (globe, broad elliptical & spindle) were used for this trial. Bulbs were planted on 12 November 2012 on seedbed having the size of 3m × 1m and plant spacing was 30cm × 20 cm. Weeding was done at 25, 50 and 75 days after planting. To control purple blotch disease, the crop was sprayed with Nativo @ 0.5g/l of water at 35, 45, 55 and 65 DAP. Similarly, to control thrips Regent @ 0.5ml/l of water was sprayed at 30, 40, 50 and 60 DAP. When the first flower opened, half of the number of umbels on each plant were enclosed within a 18 mesh net bag and tied closely so that there will be a crowding of the flowers within the bag and the other umbels are allowed to open-pollinate. The crop was harvested through 2 -12 April, 2013. They were dried in the sun, cleaned and put in polythene packet separately with about 8% moisture. In the next year, bulbs will be developed from these seeds and bulbs with desired attributes will be selected for the next year trial. Data on plant height (cm), days to stalk initiation, days to flowering, days to maturity, number of effective umbel/plant, number of flower/plant and seeds/plant (selfed and OP) were recorded.

Mean data on different yield contributing characters are presented in Table 1. In Taherpuri, flat bulb taken 38 days and 88 days to stalk initiation and flowering , respectively and round taken 35 and 91 days to stalk initiation and flowering, respectively. In Sukhsagor, globe bulb taken minimum days to stalk initiation (33 days), flowering (85 days) and days to maturity (145 days) spindle taken maximum days to stalk initiation (40 days) and flowering (97 days) and days to maturity (150 days). Among the lines, Sukhsagor globe had longest plant height (93.57 cm) and Taherpuri flat had shortest plant height (69.09 cm). Sukhsagor globe gave highest number of effective stalk per plant (3.00) and Sukhsagor broad elliptic produced lowest number of effective stalk per plant (2.30). Sukhsagor broad elliptic gave highest number of flower per umbel (213.00) and the lowest (176.80) from Taherpuri round .The maximum number of selfed seeds were obtained from Sukhsagor globe (367.90) and minimum number from Taherpuri round (52.28). Among the cultivars, highest open pollinated seeds were obtained from Sukhsagor broad elliptic (3.60 g) and lowest OP seeds were obtained from Taherpuri round (1.47g).In the next year, the selfed seeds will be planted and bulb produced from those seeds will be compared with the characteristics of mother bulb to develop breeding line.
