The experiment for screening of excess moisture tolerant maize inbreds was conducted with 100 genotypes at RARS, BARI, Jamalpur during kharif II season of 2009. Five entries were found tolerant to excess soil moisture condition in respect of yield though root porosity was observed in 55 maize inbreds. No disease infestation was found in the experiment.

To develop maize varieties tolerant to excess soil moisture condition
The experiment was conducted at RARS Jamalpur during Kharif II of 2009 with 100 maze inbreds. Sowing was done at 8th July 2009. The experiment was laid on RCB design two factor 3 replications. Factor A{1.stress environment & 2. Normal environment}factor B. genotypes. The unit plot size was 1 row 2 m long. Plant to plant distance was 20 cm .Fertilizers were applied @ 120, 80, 80, 20, 5 & 1 kg/ha of N, P2O5, K2O, S, Zn & B respectively. Irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as when necessary except knee high stage of stress environment. In stress environment water was applied continuously 7 days with a ponding depth of 10-11cm. Five plants were selected (one after one) earlier for collecting data of plant and ear height, days to tasseling and silking and for SPAD value. Other data were collected by considering all the plants for each plot. Grain yield of each plot were converted into gm/plant. All recorded data were under processing and not yet analyzed. Average data for the best performing ten entries were presented in the table 1, 2 and 3.
Research report 2009-10
Five entries were found tolerant to excess soil moisture condition in respect of yield though root porosity was observed in 55 maize inbreds. No disease infestation was found in the experiment. After 7 days continuous irrigation SPAD Value were more than 6 in entry number 46, 53 & 74 but less than 3 were in entry number 7 & 50 of which reflected on yield in stress condition.
