Advanced Yield Trial of Promising Ginger Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, BARI, Shibgonj, Bogra during April 2012 to February 2013 to select the promising ginger germplasm for releasing a variety. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications.Three promising ginger lines (G002, G005 and G006) were evaluated in this study with BARI Ginger-1 as checks. Significantly highest no. of tillers/plant, no. of leaves/plant, weight of primary and secondary rhizome, and yield along with better yield contributing characters were observed from the line G005. The highest yield obtained was 28.24 t/ha (G005) and the lowest was 16.20 t/ha (BARI Ginger-1).Plant mortality rate also lower in G005.

Objectives:

Selection of lines tolerant to diseases pest which could be selected for advanced yield trial.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted with 3 ginger lines and BARI Ginger-1 as check at SRC, Bogra during April 2012 to February 2013 to select the promising ginger germplasm for releasing a variety. Three promising ginger lines (G002, G005 and G006) were evaluated in this study with BARI Ginger-1 as check. Rhizomes were sown on 22 April 2012 maintaining 50 cm x 25 cm spacing in the unit plot size 3.0 m x 1.8 m. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of the seed rhizome was 40-45g. The crop was fertilized with 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N₁₄₀ P₅₄ K₁₁₇ S₂₀ Zn₃B₁ kg/ha. The entire quantity of cow dung, P, S, Zn, B and ½ of K was applied during land preparation. One half N was applied at 50 DAP. The rest K and N was applied with two equal splits at 80 and 110 DAP. To control soft rot disease of ginger seed treatment were done with Ridomil Gold (2g/l of water). To control the same disease foliar application of Ridomil Gold were done three times at 10 days interval starting from 75 DAP. To control rhizome fly Ripcord @ 1ml/L of water was applied at the base of the plant. Three weeding were done at 50, 85 and 110 DAP. The crop was harvested on 16 February 2013. Data on different morphological and yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed using MSTAT-C program and mean values were separated by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Data on yield and other characters of different ginger lines are presented. Number of tillers/hill, number of leaves/hill, weight of primary rhizome, weight of secondary rhizome, yield/plant and yield ton/ha varied significantly due to different germplasm. The highest yield (28.24 t/ha) was obtained from the line G005 followed by G006 (24.53 t/ha) and G002 (19.68 t/ha). The lowest yield (16.20 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Ginger-1.
