A preliminary screening of 20 maize inbred lines was done in the laboratory of Plant Breeding Division, BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2009 -10 to select suitable genotypes for saline areas of Bangladesh by using petridish with Hoagland nutrient solution. The phenotypic performances of the genotypes were observed at 0 (control), 8, 12, and 16 ds/m concentrations of NaCl. Data were taken on germination percentage, shoot length, root length and their ratio. Genotypes with higher germination percentage with better phenotypic performance at higher saline concentrations (12 and 16 ds/m) 9 genotypes were selected for further screening in saline area of southern belt.

Variety and Species
To find out degree of tolerance in salinity of maize inbred lines.
This experiment was conducted during season of 2009 -10 in the laboratory of Pant Breeding Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The trial included 20 germplasm to observe their tolerance against different concentration of NaCl solution viz, 0, 8, 12 and 16 ds/m. Seedlings were grown on Hoagland's nutrient solution with mentioned salinity in pretridish. Data on germination percentage were taken at and from 3rd days after seed setting. After one week, seedlings were transferred in glass cup with the same growing media, and data on root and shoot length (cm) were taken at 18th day.
Research report 2009-10
The phenotypic performances of the genotypes were observed at 0 (control), 8, 12, and 16 ds/m concentrations of NaCl. Data were taken on germination percentage, shoot length, root length and their ratio. Genotypes with higher germination percentage with better phenotypic performance at higher saline concentrations (12 and 16 ds/m) 9 genotypes were selected for further screening in saline area of southern belt. On the basis of over all performance, germination (%), root length, shoot length and root shoot ratio, only 3 inbred lines (CZ-10, CZ-24 and CZ-29) were found partially tolerant to salinity at seedling stage.
