A manually operated coconut husking machine has been developed at FMPE Division, BARI. Traditional practice of husking is risky and takes more arm strength. The developed manual operated husk can split the husk with no risk and less arm strength. The capacity of the machine is higher than traditional method. The machine is made of locally available materials. The capacity of the machine was 120 to 150 husks per hour. Two men can operate the machine easily. Both mature and immature coconut husk could be dehusked easily. There was no husk with the nut. The efficiency of the machine was 90 per cent.

Farm Mechanization
(i) To design and fabricate a manually operated coconut husking machine
(ii) To evaluate the husking performance of the machine.
A hand operated coconut husking machine was fabricated at FMPE Division Workshop, BARI, Gazipur in 2003-04. The machine is made of MS angle. The main parts of the machine were two cutting blades, frame, handle, spring and stand. The machine size is 132 x 40 x 91 cm and weight is 27 kg. Two labourers can operate it easily. The principal part of the machine was a sharp-shard made of mild steel bar. It was positioned vertically with handle and another sharp-shard part was placed on the channel of the frame. The sharp shard is initially close and finally open when push the force on the handle and pedal. The coconut is placed between two sharp shards. The force applied on the handle by hand and the pedal at a time, the coconut husk was split out.
