Integrated Management of Onion Thrips (thrips Tabaci)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Several management approaches were evaluated against thrips in onion at SRC, Bogra during rabi season, 2012-2013 to find out the best management options against thrips in onion. The reduction of thrips population from Sticky white trap+ Fipronil (Regent 50SC) treated plot (3.81thrips/plant at first spray) was maximum (65.86%) which was statistically identical to Spinosad (Tracer 45SC) + Neem seed extract (4.95 thrips/plant) and Sticky white trap+ Neem seed extract (6.29 thrips/plant) but differed significantly from other treatments. In second and third spray, sticky white trap +Fipronil application showed minimum thrips per plant and highest population reduction which was identical to tracer + neem seed extracts. The highest bulb yield (16.88t/ha) was also obtained from Sticky white trap+ Fipronil (Regent 50SC) treated plot which was identical to Spinosad (Tracer 45SC) + Neem seed extract (14.58t/ha). However, economically Sticky white trap+ Fipronil (Regent 50SC) gave highest MBCR (12.88).

Objectives:

To find out the best performing management option against thrips in onion.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at SRC, Bogra during rabi 2012-2013 to find out the best management options against thrips in onion. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with the three replications. The test crop was BARI Onion-4. Five treatments viz. Sticky white trap (T1); Neem seed extract @ 50g/L of water (T2); Sticky white trap + Neem seed extract @ 50g/L of water (T3); Sticky white trap + Fipronil (Regent 50SC) @ 0.5ml/L of water (T4) and Spinosad (Tracer 45SC) @ 0.4ml/L of water + Neem seed extract @ 50g/L of water (T5) including Untreated control (T6) were evaluated in this study. Fourty day old seedlings were transplanted on 26 December 2012. Unit plot size was 4m × 1.2m and spacing was 15cm X 10cm. Three weedings were done at 15, 25 and 45 DAT. Four irrigations were done at 15, 25, 40 and 55 DAT. The crop was harvested on 29 March 2013. Each plot consisted of 8 lines and 40 plants. Thrips population was counted at 7 days interval from the first appearance of thrips infestation. Number of thrips (both adult and nymphs) was counted from 15 randomly selected plants of each plot. The crop was fertilized with/In addition to 5t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N110 P52 K75 S20 Zn4 B1.5 kg/ha. The entire amount of cow dung P, S, B, Zn, 1/3 N and ½ K was applied during land preparation. The rest N and K was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 DAT). All recommended agronomic practices were followed for the production of onion. . Crop yield data were also recorded immediately after crop harvest

Achievement/Findings:

Onion thrips infestation was higher and specifically number of thrips and damage was increased throughout the season. Highly significant differences among the treatments were observed after treatment application. Irrespective of three spray, sticky white trap+ Fipronil showed its superiority over other treatments. However, spinosad (Tracer 45SC) + Neem seed extract was also found better. Use of sticky white trap along gave minimum population reduction. Similarly, use of neem seed extract also gave minimum population reduction. Sticky white trap+ Fipronil (Tracer 45SC) was most effective in controlling thrips problem in onion with higher yield and highest marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR).
