Combined Effects of Antibiotics and Fungicides in Controlling Blight Disease of Cotton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effectiveness of antibiotics and fungicides applied alone or mixtures as seed treatment followed by spray were investigated in controlling cotton blight disease. The efficacy of two levels of Streptomycin sulphate alone or together with Bavistin were tested against untreated control. The results revealed that the combination of antibiotic and fungicide can be used successfully in controlling cotton blight as well as in increasing of seed cotton yield.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to determine the combined effect of antibiotic and fungicide in controlling cotton blight when applied as seed treatment followed by spray.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur in 2002-2003. The 5 treatments viz. 1. Streptomycin sulphate (@250 ppm), 2. Streptomycin sulphate (@125 ppm) + Cupravit (0.25%), 3. Streptomycin sulphate (@ 250 ppm) + Cupravit (0.25%), 4. Bavistin (0.25%) and 5. control were allocated to the plot in RCB design with 4 replications. The unit plot size was 6m×3.6m. Seed treatments were done with the respective chemicals before sowing and spraying were done thrice at 15 days interval starting from the first initiation of disease. All the plots receive the equal management practices. Data were taken as % leaf area infected from 5 plants of a plot. The disease rating scale was as follows: 0= No infection 1=1-5% leaf area infected 2=5-10% leaf area infected 3=11-20% leaf area infected 4=21-50% leaf area infected 5. ≤50% leaf area infected Percent data after log transformation were analyzed by using MSTAT.

Achievement/Findings:

Blight incidence differ significantly among the treatments. The lowest disease incidence was obtained from seed treatment followed by spray of Streptomycin sulphate (@125 ppm) + Cupravit (0.25%) and the highest incidence from the control treatment. The highest seed cotton yield (2.10 t/ha) was obtained from Streptomycin sulphate (@125 ppm) + Cupravit (0.25%) treated and sprayed plots and the lowest (1.48 t/ha) from the control plots.
