Field Demonstration of Hydrotiller, Rotary Weeder, Diaphragm Pump and Thresher

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The farmers expressed their satisfaction of the performance of the threshers and hence showed interest to buy the same. The deputy Directors of DAE, Thakurgoan and Rangpur, the in charge of BARI Regional station, thakurgaon and Rangpur were also satisfied on the performance of the thresher and concluded that they will request director General, BRRI for the repaid extension of the threshers. The Barind Multipurpose development Authority (BMDA) withes to purchase three units of rice/wheat thresher for threshing wheat at in their project site. This year BMDA ordered 3 rice/ wheat thresher and one hydrotiller. Extension officers requested to supply at least one unit of this machine free of cost for sales promotion through demonstration in their respective localities. Mr. Bablu Mirja, an innovative farmer of Thakurgaon expressed his satisfaction on the performance of the thresher and wanted to buy one of the same.

Objectives:

To create awareness about the use of farm machinery

Methodology:

In pursuance of the decision taken in the 25th BRRI board of governor’s meeting regarding the extension and disseminating of BRRI developed machinery to the farmers, two on-farm demonstrations were arranged on the 2nd February,1993 and on the 31st March, 1993 respectively at BRRI H.Q farm before the members of the Central committee for Agricultural Machinery Demonstration (CCAMD), BARC. Farm Machinery and Postharvest Technology Taskforce members and BRRI Head of the divisions were also present. BRRI developed hydro tiller power tiller rice transplanter, drum seeder, rotary weeder, diaphragm pump and rice/wheat thresher were demonstrated. After a threadbare discussion some modification/alterations were suggested. The committee suggested that these machinery need to be demonstrated as soon as possible in the farmers field. They also proposed to fabricate enough prototypes of these machines for demonstrations all over the country simultaneously. The field level demonstration of rice/wheat thresher along with hydrotiller and rotary weeder were also conducted during the month of April 1993 in the following sites: o Ruhia, Thana: Ruhia, Dist: Thakurgoan; o Kachubari, Thana: Thakurgoan, Dist: Thakurgoan; i. West Kadirhat, Thana: Ranisankara, Dist: Thakurgoan; ii. BARI Regional station, Dist: Thakurgoan; iii. BARI Regional station (OFRD), Alamnagar, Dist: Rangpur; iv. Godagari, Thana: godagari, Dist: Rajshahi and v. Paba, Thana: Paba, Dist: Rajshahi.

Achievement/Findings:

some suggestions/observations were achieved from the demonstrations. o The cleaning mechanism of the large thresher should be improved by adjusting the blower speed and the chaff guide which may also improve the unwanted grain scattering. An engine cover is also felt necessary for its safe operation. o The sieve should be extended by 30 to 40 cm in order to collect all the threshed grain in the grain collector. o An intermediate prototype of about 80 to 90 cm drum length may be designed, fabricated for better adaptability in the field. o In order to save the wheat straw for thatching purposes a hold-on type thresher of about 80 cm drum length may be design and fabricated. o The DAE Gramin Bank CDP and other NGO’s should undertake extension programmes of the thresher among the North and north eastern farmers of Bangladesh. o The local manufacturers should come forward to manufacture the thresher. o The scheduled banks could provide loan among the farmers for the extension of the thresher.
