Eighteen accessions of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) showed viny and bushy plant growth habit; pubescent and highly pubescent stem; and shallow, intermediate and deep leaf lobes. Elliptical elongate, oblong ellipsoid and stem-end tapered green fruit shape were observed among the cucumber accessions. Stem-end and blossom-end fruit shape were rounded, flattened and depressed. Netted smooth and tuberculate fruit skin texture were noted. Light to dark green with yellow stripped of immature fruit skin color; grayed-orange and yellow orange of mature fruit color; yellow and green of flesh color, and grayed-yellow and grayed-orange of seed color were found. All the accessions revealed unbranched tendril, angular stem, palmately lobed leaf shape, monoecious and uneven fruit surface, absent fruit skin motting and yellow fruit stripe. The male flower generally appeared about 10 days earlier than the female ones. The highest co-efficient of variation (%) was observed in number of branches on main vine (41.64%) followed by the number of fruits per plant (34.94%), number of nodes on main vine (25.53%), fruit length (23.74%), main vine length (20.8%) and 100-seed weight (21.64%) and the lowest in days to fruit maturity (4.3%).

(i) to study the genetic variability,

(ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,

(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and

(iv) to increase seed for conservation.

The experiment was conducted with 18 accessions of cucumber from 6 districts (Pabna, Chapai Nawabganj, Gazipur, Sherpur, Rajshahi and Chittagong) in Bangladesh. The seeds were planted in polyethylene bags on 19 November 2001. Pits of 50x 50 x50 cm were prepared 10 days before transplanting the seedlings. Ten days older seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pit on 29 November 2001. Two seedlings of each accession were transplanted in a single pit. Pit to pit distance was 3 m. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with 3 replications. Ten kg of cow dung, 80 g TSP and 70 g MP were applied in each pit as basal doses. Eighty grams urea were applied in each pit after seedling establishment in two equal installment of 20 days interval. For controlling soil pests, Basudin 10G @10 g/pit was applied before seedling transplanting. Sumithion 50EC (3 ml/l) was applied for controlling beetles and other insects. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a successful crop. The plants were grown on cloth nets with bamboo trails. Observations were recorded on 22 qualitative and 13 quantitative trails as per Descriptors for Vegetables and Condiments, Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Sri Lanka (1995). Mean data on three replications were used for statistical analysis.

All the accessions of cucumber showed unbranched tendril, angular stem shape, palmately lobed leaf shape, monoeious, uneven fruit surface, absent fruit skin mottling, yellow colour of flower and fruit stripe. Viny (14 acc.) and bushy (4) types of plant growth habit, pubescent (14) and highly pubescent (4) stem, and shallow (10), intermediate and deep (1) leaf lobes were observed among the cucumber accessions. Maximum number of fruit was observed in elliptical elongate (10) followed by oblong-ellipsoid (5) and the lowest in stem end tapered (3). Stem-end and blossom-end fruit shape was highest in flattened type followed by rounded and depressed types among the accessions. Netted (12), smooth (5) and tuberculate (1) of mature fruit skin texture and grainy-firm and smooth-firm (both 9) flesh texture were noted. Light green, green and dark green of stem and leaf were found. Green with yellow-stripped (12), light green and dark green with yellow stripped (both 3) of immature fruit skin colour were observed. Grayed-orange (13) and yellow orange (5) of mature fruit colour, yellow (12) and green (6) of flesh colour, and grayed-yellow (16) and grayed-orange (2) of seed colour were noted among the accessions. Variations were found in number of branches on main vine (1.0 to 6.33), nodes on main vine (20 to 64), length of main vine (1.11 to 2.75 m), days to 1st male flowering (50 to75 days), 1st female flowering (59 to 81 days), first green fruit harvest (78 to104 days), fruit maturity (116 to 137 days), immature fruit length (14.28 to 30.00 cm), width (5.21 to 8.00 cm) and weight (252.9 to 501.0 g), number of fruits per plant (3 to 7), seed length (1.0 to 1.3 cm) and hundred seed weight (2.06 to 4.41 g).
