Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to determine the fluctuation of groundwater level and its relationship with rainfall. The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur. During this period maximum lowering of groundwater was observed in March and minimum in September/October in all of the locations. Maximum water table depths were 16.9, 8.35 & 4.41 m at Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur respectively. In the previous year (2003-04), the corresponding depths were 16.0, 8.4 & 4.9 m at Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur respectively.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur. Fluctuation of ground water was regularly recorded through observational wells. Monthly rainfall and groundwater fluctuation from July 2004 to June 2005.

Achievement/Findings:

This result showed that maximum groundwater level in this year was lower than the previous year indicating that groundwater level is going downward day hy day during dry season. The lowering may be due to increased pumping demand and scanty rainfall from November to March. Minimum water table depths were 11.1, 2.26 & 1.78 m at above mentioned 3 locations respectively. At Gazipur the minimum water table depth was .09 m lower than the last year water level 2004. The study indicated that Rangpur areas are suitable for shallow but Gazipur and Rajshahi are suitable for deep tubewell based irrigation development. It is also observed that groundwater level is gradually declining day by day during dry season but it is recharged fully after the monsoon except a few locations.
