Identification of Suitable Aquifer at Different BRRI Regional Stations.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was determine the lithological characteristics for effective groundwater utilization. Gazipur, the lithological log of underground formation it is clear that the main aquifer is at a depth from 45.0 m to 51.0 m. Bhanga, it is clear that the aquifer starts from 48.0 m and it is extended up to 60.0 m. Comilla, the litho logical investigation shows that the first 15.0m from the ground surface is grey to blackish clay. After that, from 15.0 m- 18.0m is brown silty sand, from 18.0 – 27.0m is gray to blackish clay, from 27.0 m- 33.0 m is again gray to blackish hard clay, from 27.0 m- 33.0m is brown silty clay. Satkhira, It was observed from the litho logical investigation that the first 9.0 m from the ground surface is hard clay. After that, from 9.0 m – 12.0 m is clay, from 12.0 m-48.0 m is fin to medium sand, from 48.0 m – 51.0 m is medium sand. Below 51.0m -60.m is coarse sand.

This study was conducted in BRRI Gazipur, Comilla, Bhanga, Satkhira. Observation wells were installed in this areas to observe the aquifer characters.

Achievement/Findings:

BRRI Gazipur: From the lithological investigation it was found that the first 9.0 m from the ground surface is brown clay. After that, from 9.0-12.0 m is hard clay, from 12.2m- 33.5 m is clay, from 33.0 m-36.0 m is again hard clay, from 36.0 m-39.0 m is very hard clay, from 39.0m – 42.0 m is clay, from 42.0 m- 45.0 m is fine sand and from 45.0 m -51.0 m is medium to coarse reddish sand. Observation wells were installed in this aquifer and 6 m long strainer was placed at a depth from 45.0-51.0 m. BRRI, Satkhira: From the lithological log of underground formation. The observation wells were installed in this aquifer and it was screened from 55 m to 60 m. the aquifer was large enough to installed DTWs and STWs. BRRI, Bhanga: The bore log shows that from 0 -12.2 m from the ground surface is clay. Then from 12.2 m – 21.3 m is fine sand, from 21.30m -30.5 m is brown fine to medium sand, from 30.5 m- 48.8 m is brown medium sand and from 48.8 m- 59.5 m is brown coarse sand. The observation well was screened in this main aquifer from 53.5 m-59.5 m. BRRI, Comilla: In BRRI farm Comilla, After that a small aquifer was found from 33.0m -39.0 m having brown medium sand and from 57.0 m -75.0 m grey to whitish coarse sand. From the lithological log of underground formation it is clear that there are two aquifers separated by a layer.
