The research work was carried out from September 2009 to May 2010. A total number of 15 diarrhoeic kids were used for this experiment. The average age and body weight were about 2 months and 5 kg in case of kids. The diarrhoeic kids were divided into three groups like A, B, C. The kids belonging to group A and B were treated with aqueous leaves extract of guava leaves. 1.5 ml/kg body weight respectively orally twice daily for five days. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of all the extracts and antibiotics were determined by microdilution techniquesin Mueller-Hinton Broth. The research work revealed that diarrhoeic kids when treated with extract of guava leaves responded promptly. From the antibacterial activity results it was found that P. Guajava extracts active against gram positive and inactive against gram-negative bacteria. However, the extracts and active compound isolated from P. Guajava should be further studied in animal models for in vitro efficacy and toxicity. In term of conservation, the results showed that leaf material could be useful for antimicrobial uses, and it could be used without any detrimental effect on the plant.

1. To evaluate the gastrointestinal effects of an aqueous extract of guava leaves. 2. To study in vitro antibacterial activity of guava leaves against isolated organisms.

The research work was carried out from September 2009 to May 2010. A total number of 15 diarrhoeic kids were used for this experiment. The diarrhoeic kids were divided into three groups like A, B, C. Among three groups A, B remained as test group and C was control group. Each group consists of 5 kids. The feeding schedules was according to farm schedule. The average age and body weight were about 2 months and 5 kg in case of kids. Psidium guajava. (Myrtaceae), the common guava tree, is widely distributed as a native plant in Bangladesh including throughout the world. Fresh leaves of P. guajava were collected from the herbal Plant Garden of BLRI. The plant material was air dried and then ground with a five mm diameter mesh. The plant extract was prepared. The powered material was extracted in water by bringing the mixture to the boil, leaving to stand and filtering. The kids belonging to group A and B were treated with aqueous leaves aqueous extract was evaporated in a rotary evaporator and then reconstituted with sterile water (100mg/ml). The kids belonging to group A and B were treated with aqueous leaves aqueous extract @ 1.5 ml /kg body weight respectively orally twice daily for five days. Group C was considered as control. In each group adequate saline was supplied and observed daily. The extract were assayed against gram positive and gram-negative bacteria by broth microdilution assay to determine the MICs. Most studies were performed with Escherichia coli Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and enterococci. The microorganisms were grown in nutrient broth (Difco Laboratories, Detroit, Ml) at 37? and maintained on nutrient agar slants at 4?. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of all the extracts and reference antibiotics (tetracycline, vancomycin and penicillin –Sigma Chemical Co., Louis, MO, US) were determined by microdilution techniquesin Mueller-Hinton Broth (Merck). Inoculates were prepared in the same medium at a density adjusted to a 0.5 McFarland turbidity standard (108 colony forming units (CFU/ml) and diluted 1:10 for the broth microdilution procedure. Micrptiter plates were incubated at 37? and the MICS were recorded after 24 hours of incubation. Two susceptibility endpoints were recorded for each isolated. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentration of compounds at which the microorganisms tested did not demonstrate visible growth. Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was defined as the lowest concentration yielding negative subcultures or only one colony. For detection of antimicrobial activity a sensitive radial diffusion technique was used. The agarose layer consisted of 30 mg/ 100mlTryptic Soy Broth system (BBL) in 10 mM phosphate buffer, pH 7.2 with 0.02 % Tween 20 and 0.8% GTG agarose phase (Sigma Chemical CO.). The plates were incubated at 37? for 16 hours until growth of the microorganism was visible.
