Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Earlier BRRI had developed hold on type open drum thresher to thresh the panicle only and straw remain unchanged during threshing. Cleaning mechanism was absent. Recently, BRRI has developed head feed thresher where material was carried by chain. Cleaning facility was attached to the thresher. Prototype was developed. During laboratory testing, threshing and cleaning performance was not upto the mark due to low blower and threshing drum speed. Existing pulley should be changed. Blower can not supply sufficient air to clean the material.

Objectives:

• To develop a head feed thresher • To conduct test of the thresher for its performance and capacity • To compare the performance with BRRI existing thresher.

Methodology:

Materials and methods: BRRI head feed thresher was designed and fabricated under joint collaboration of BRRI and Comilla Co-opeative Karkhana, Comilla. The thresher was fabricated based on the design consideration of close drum and open drum thresher. Design consideration -Panicle to be threshed -Straw remain unchanged after threshing -Material to be carried by chain -Cleaning mechanism to be present -Rice, wheat, pulse can be thresher by one machine by adding simple device Functional test of the prototype was done the BRRI FMPHT research workshop Materials needed to conduct the laboratory testing of the machine -Harvested crops -Digital tachometer -Anemometer -Stop watch -Weighing scale Data to be collected: • Capacity of the thresher, threshing time, cost of threshing • Fuel consumption per hour • Functional problems during operations • Labour requirement, Germination (%) of dried paddy

Achievement/Findings:

Some mechanical faults were identified and listed for further improvement of the thresher. Power transmission should be redesigned to reduced the number of pulley. Blower should be redesigned to provide sufficient air for proper cleaning.
