Fifteen varieties of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were characterized on fourteen qualitative characters. Variations were observed in all qualitative characters except plant growth type. The highest variation was observed in both predominant fruit shape (flattened, round, high round, heart shaped and lengthened cylindrical) and ripe fruit color (orange, light orange, red, yellow and green, and deep red and green). Disease incidence (%) and disease severity (%) were estimated to identify the tolerant varieties against leaf curl virus (LCV) at field without virus inoculation. The highest disease incidence (100%) was found in BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-5, BARI Tomato-9 and BARI Tomato-11 followed by BARI Hybrid Tomato-3 (97%), BARI Tomato-8 (94%), BARI Tomato-12 (61%) and BARI Tomato-13 (61%) indicated that these varieties were highly susceptible to leaf curl virus (LCV). The lowest disease incidence (25%) was found in both BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-14. Considering diseases index in current with the last two years, BARI Tomato-10, BARI Tomato-11 and BARI Tomato-14 may be less susceptible or also susceptible to leaf curl virus.

i) To characterize the tomato varieties released from BARI

ii) To evaluate the susceptibility of tomato varieties against LCV disease.

The experiment was conducted at PGRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Fifteen varieties of tomato was characterized in 2009-2010 and evaluated during winter season of 2011-2012. The seedlings were transplanted on 27 November, 2011 in the field. The seedling of each variety was planted in 3 X 1 m plot maintaining line to line 60 cm and plant to plant 50 cm spacing. Recommended fertilizer dose and cultural practices were followed. Qualitative observations were recorded as per Descriptors for Tomato (IPGRI, 1996). Disease severity scoring was done according to: 1 plant not stunted, 1-2 leaves curled, no yield loss, 2 plant stunted, medium yield, 3 plant stunted, some yield and 4 plant heavily stunted, no yield. Disease incidence (%) and percent disease index also were estimated.

All the varieties exhibited indeterminate growth type. The highest variability was observed in predominant fruit shape viz. flattened-1, round-4, high round-4, heart shaped-5 and lengthened cylindrical-1. The highest variability was also found in ripe fruit color, orange-3, light orange-1, red-9, yellow and green-1 and deep red and green-1. For stem pubescence, weak-3, medium-9 and strong-3 were observed. Three types of leaf attitude such as semi-erect-1, horizontal -2 and drooping-12 were found. Three types of immature fruit color such as dark-2, medium-7 and large-5 were found among the varieties. In case of immature fruit color viz. dark green-2, light green-6 and green-7 were found. Round-8 and irregular-7 were found for shape of transverse section of fruit. Flesh color of ripe fruit showed orange-3, red-4 and yellow and red-8 among the varieties. For ribbing at calyx end, slight-12, medium-2 and strong-1were observed among the varieties. Three types of fruit size variability viz. small-1, medium-7 and large-4 were found. Dot-10, stellate-2 and irregular-3 were observed for shape of pistil scar. In case of fruit apex shape, indented-4, flat-5 and pointed-6 were observed. The highest disease incidence (100%) was found in BARI Tomato-4, BARI Tomato-5, BARI Tomato-9 and BARI Tomato-11 followed by BARI Hybrid Tomato-3 (97%), BARI Tomato-8 (94%), BARI Tomato-12 (61%) and BARI Tomato-13 (61%) indicated that the varieties were highly susceptible to leaf curl virus (LCV). The lowest disease incidence (25%) was found in BARI Tomato-2 and BARI Tomato-14. These varieties were less susceptible to leaf curl virus. In previous two years, BARI Tomato-10, BARI Tomato-11 and BARI Tomato-14 did not show any disease but the current year, these varieties were found susceptible to leaf curl virus. Considering the results of three years trial it appears that BARI Tomato-11, -12 and -14 are less susceptible or also susceptible to leaf curl disease.
