Characterization of Pumpkin

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eighty one accessions of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch ex Poir) showed different qualitative variations such as pubescent and highly pubescent stem, and round, angular and quadrangular stem shape. Flattened, oblong, oval and rounded fruit shape were found. Different types of fruit rib and fruit surface were found. Light green, green to dark green in both stem and leaf along with small, medium to large leaf size were exhibited among the accessions. Flattened, oblong, oval to round fruit shape with absent, superficial to intermediate fruit rib were found. Light green, yellow-green to dark green fruit skin colour were found at green stage. Predominant and secondary fruit skin colour varied from green, blue green, yellow-orange and yellow to orange. Flower colour varied from yellow to yellow-orange. Seed colour was yellow-white to orange-white. All the accessions showed viny plant-growth habit, branched tendril and reiniform leaf shape. Good variations were found in primary branches (3.10 to 7.0), vine length (2.7 to 6.5 m), fruit length (10.4 to 34.0 cm), width (10.9 to 22.3 cm), weight (0.93 to 5.7 kg) and number fruits per plant (3 to 8). Maximum CV was noted in fruit weight (36.83%) and minimum in days to first male flowering (5.78%).

Objectives:

(i) to study the genetic diversity,

(ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another,

(iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and

(iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 81 accessions of pumpkin at PGRC, BARI, Gazipur during 2001-2002. The germplasms were collected from 9 districts (Chittagong, Khagrachari, Bandarban, Cox'es bazar, Pabna, Natore, Chapai Nawabgonj, Gazipur and Sherpur) of Bangladesh. The seeds were planted on polybags on 17 November 2001. The seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pit and 2 seedlings in each pit on 3 December 2001. Pit to pit distance was 4 m. Approximately 10 kg cowdung, 80 g TSP and 60 g MP were used in each pit as basal doses. Seventy-gram urea was applied in each pit after seedling establishment in two equal installments of 10 days interval. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a good crop. The plants were grown in the field without any bamboo trails. Data were recorded on 17 qualitative and 11 quantitative trails as per pumpkin descriptor (Genetic Resources of cucurbitaceae, IBPGR, 1983). Mean data on 3 replications were used for statistical analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Pubescent (67) and highly pubescent (14) stem; and quadrangular (59), angular (17) and round (15) shape of stem were observed among pumpkin accessions. Medium (47), small (26) and large (8) leaf were found. Flattened (37), oblong (18), oval and round (both 3) fruit shape were observed. Superficial (66) and intermediate (14) fruit ribs were noted almost the accessions. Fruit surfaces were smooth (41) and uneven (40). Light green, green to dark green stem and leaf were found. Two types of flower colour such as yellow (48) and yellow-orange (33) were observed among the accessions. Immature fruit skin colours were dark green (34), light green (26) and yellow-green (2). Yellow-orange (60) predominant fruit skin colours were maximum followed by green (10) and orange (9) and minimum in yellow colour (2). But incase of secondary fruit skin colour, green type (46) was maximum followed by yellow-orange (29) and blue-green (5), and orange (1) colour was minimum in number. Yellow-white (57) and orange-white seed colours were found among the accessions. All the accessions revealed viny plant growth habit, branched tendril, reiniform leaf and undulating leaf margin. Days to early male flowerings were ranged from 69 days (BD-4396) to 92 days (BD-4413). Days to late flowering were ranged from 79 days (BD-4387) to 102 days (BD-4369). Generally the male flower appeared 11 days earlier than the female one's. The accessions were produced 4 to 8 fruits .Seed length and seed width were ranged from 1.56 to 19.78 cm and 6.90 to 10.67 cm, respectively. Hundred-seed weight were ranged from 9.96 to 22.95 g. The highest CV (%) was noted in fruit weight (36.83) followed by number of fruits per plant (30.81) and the lowest in days to first male flowering (5.78).
