Growing and Rejuvenation of Rice Germplasm Accessions and New Collections.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Main objective of this study was to increase the seed for characterization and further storage. The accession, which possessed less than 80% germination and stored before 2001 were grown in T. Aman 2004-05 and Boro 2004-05 seasons under transplanted conditions and Aus 2004 (upland) in line sowing using single row of 5.4 m long per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants respectively. A total of 1141 germplasm accession including new collections were grown for rejuvenation in three rice growing seasons. Among 1141 germplasm, 425 including 350 new collections were grown in T. Aman, 460 were grown in Aus 2004 and 256 accessions including 243 new collections were grown in Boro 2004-05 season.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The accession, which possessed less than 80% germination and stored before 2001 were grown in T. Aman 2004-05 and Boro 2004-05 seasons under transplanted conditions and Aus 2004 (upland) in line sowing using single row of 5.4 m long per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 20 cm between rows and plants respectively. Fertilizers were applied @ 60:60:40 Kg NPK/ha T. Aman and Aus and @ 80:60:40 Kg NPK/ha in Boro season. Proper control measures were taken for pests, diseases and weeds when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

The accessions (stored for three years) were monitored for viability and accessions which possessed less than 80% germination were grown (1141 accessions) for rejuvenation. Among 1141 accessions 15 (10 for T. Aman and 5 for Boro) entries were poorly germinated and eventually they were dead. In addition, 29 entries did not flower in Aus season due to different unfavorable situations and photoperiod sensitivity for the varieties as they were flowered during Aman season. Finally, 1097 accessions were processed for used increase and rejuvenation. Newly collection germplasm were registered as accessions after sorting out the duplicates.
