Productivity of Sugarcane with Wheat as First and Mungbean as Second Intercrop Under Paired Row Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken at BSRI farm to find out the suitability of different wheat varieties as first and mungbean as second inter crop under paired row cane (PRC) following STP method. The results of the study reveals that no significant difference in respect of tiller, millable canes, cane yield and pol % cane in different treatments was observed in the experiment. Regarding yield of wheat variety Shatabdi (3.96 t ha-1) was the best among all the varieties used in the study. The lowest yield of wheat was produced in variety Kanchan (3.05 t ha-1). The maximum total adjusted cane yield (131.00 t ha-1) was found in the treatment T5 (T1 + Sourav – mungbean) while minimum (87.62 t ha-1) in the T1 (PRC only). The highest equivalent cane yield of inter crop (41.79 t ha-1) was found in the T7 treatment where wheat variety Shatabdi as first and mungbean as second intercrop were grown with sugarcane. Yields of second inter crop mungbean in different treatments were identical except T8 where no first inter crop was grown. Salient results of the experiment revealed that wheat as first and mungbean as second inter crop can be grown successfully with sugarcane in paired row.

Objectives:

iii). To get an interim economic benefit from intercropping with sugarcane.

iv). To popularize wheat as intercrop with wider row sugarcane

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in BSRI Farm during the cropping season 2003-2004. There were eight treatment of inter cropping different wheat varieties viz. Kanchan, Akbar, Protiva, Sourav, Gourab and Shatabdi as first and mungbean as second inter crop under paired row cane (PRC) following STP method. The trial was laid out in RCB design with three replications using cane variety Isd 34.

Salient results of the experiment revealed that wheat as first and mungbean as second inter crop can be grown successfully with sugarcane in paired row.The research results will help the farmers to cultivate wheat as 1st inter crop and mungbean with sugarcane for better economic benefits.
