A trial was conducted at Spices Research Center ,Bogra during rabi season of 2008-009 with the objectives to evaluate one selected winter chilli line CO 578 in respect of yield ,better fruit quality with tolerant to common pests and diseases. The performances of studied line favoured to consumer’s desired fruit and yield contributing characters as dry chilli.

The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Centre, Bogra during rabi season of 2008-2009. It was a non-replicated trial. One selected winter chilli line C0 578 was used in this study. The unit plot size was 5m x 1m and the row and plant spacing were 25x 20cm. The plot was fertilized with cowdung, TSP, half of MP, Gypsum and Borax @ 10t/ha, 300kg/ha, 200kg/ha, 110kg/ha and 5kg/ha at the time of final land preparation. Urea (@ 210 kg/ha and half of MP were used as top dress after 25, 50 and 70 days of sowing. Different intercultural operations like, weeding, watering, spraying of fungicides and insecticides are continuing as and when necessary. The seeds were sown directly on September 15, 2008. Data on number of fruits/plant, average fruit weight (g), fruit size (length & breadth), fruit surface, color, fruit orientation, hotness etc. were recorded from ten randomly selected plants. The crops were harvested from the month of February, 2009.

The chilli line C0578 gave longer fruit with, smooth, glossy skin and moderately resistant/tolerant to common insect pest and diseases. The selected line possesses short plant height (59.0 cm). Number of red ripe fruits was recorded 258.0 per plant and weight of single fruit was 2.0 gm only. CO 578 possesses long fruit (13 cm) with breadth of 1.0 cm. Each pod contained of 96 seeds.
Generally consumers prefer long, glossy, smooth and thin skin dry chilli. The line C0578 mostly belongs to those characteristics. Data on number of branching, flower drop (%), fresh and dry chili and ratio, yield etc. will be recorded in next season. The performance trial will be replicated before going for regional yield trial.
