Birth Weight of Kid According Performances of Hilly Goat at Farm Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The hilly goats are browsing in nature and allowed to grasses in field. They are able to adapt any adverse condition. They are small in size but prolificacy are high. The tribal people in our hilly areas are also habitual to rearing this species. The studied animals were maintained in a semi-intensive rearing system. All goats were housed in a wooden floor house, were allowed to graze for 6-7 hours per day and concentrate was offered twice daily during morning and evening at the rate of 200-250 gm per head per day. Parameters studied were: Gestation length (GL), Kidding to first heat (KFH), Kidding to conception (KC), Kidding interval (KI), litter size (LS) and birth weight of kids (BW). The reproductive traits were non significantly affected on gestation length, kidding to first heat, kidding to conception and kidding interval. The gestation length, kidding to first heat, kidding to conception and kidding interval were 148.52±1.06, 33.48±2.85, 33.40±1.98 and 176.86±1.98 days respectively. According to parity the GL, KFH, KC and KI were not followed trends up to 3rd parity but kid birth weight was increasing trends with increasing parity up to fifth. The birth weight of male kid (1.25±0.25 kg) was higher than that of female kid (1.13±0.27 kg). Birth weight of single and twin kid stood first followed by triplet kids. The variation of productive and reproductive traits not fur among them.

Objectives:

Assess the birth weight relationship with number of kid during birth performance of hilly goat at farm level.

Methodology:

The breeding program was conducted initially through open nucleus breeding system (ONBS) at hilly areas at Naikhonchari and was designed in such a way, which resists inbreeding. Animals were maintained in a semi-intensive rearing system. All goats were housed in a wooden floor house, were allowed to graze for 6-7 hours per day and concentrate was offered twice daily during morning and evening at the rate of 200-250 gm per head per day. Data on productive, reproductive and disease incidence were recorded regularly. Parameters studied were: Gestation length (GL), kidding to first heat (KFH), kidding to conception (KC), kidding interval (KI), litter size (LS) and Birth weight of kids (BW). The statistical analysis of the data was perform using compare mean with one way ANOVA and univariate analysis of variance procedure of SPSS package. The difference between treatments means were examined by using Duncun Multiple Range Test.
