Stock Improvement and Dissemination of Thai Pangus (pangasianodon Hypophthalmus)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mass seed production of Thai pangus P. hypophthalmus become a common practice in the private hatchery in Bangladesh during mid 90s. However, rapid expansion of pangasius aquaculture industry is facing various challenges like less growth performance in their culture system. This less growth rate might be due to inbreeding problem as hatchery operators are using same founder stock for long time. In view of this problem, BFRI has taken initiative to introduce new wild stock from Thailand and Vietnam to improve pangus stock through rotational breeding techniques. Successful seed production from new stock was achieved and about 90,000 fingerling of pangus were distributed to farmers and hatchery operators.

Objectives:

Stock improvement of pangus through rotational group breeding techniques; comparative growth study of improved and existing/ local stocks of pangus; mass seed production and distribution of improved breeders.

Methodology:

Currently two wild stocks of pagasius available for group breeding programs in the BFRI, FWS hatchery. One wild stock imported from Thailand during the year 2010 and the other wild stock imported from Vietnam at the end of 2011. Breeding of pangus was initiated in July-August this year. Within the randomly selected group, 10 pairs (sex ratio of female and male 1:1) of brood were mated separately to make 10 families. From each family, a sub sample of fertilized eggs (50-100 ml fertilized eggs/pair) was taken and incubated in funnel/jars or units and spawn from each group was stocked in separate nursery ponds. The production of F1 generation of pangus was carried out by rotational breeding among the 4 groups. Genetic enhancement of pangus will further be continued generation after generation following the same rotational breeding protocol. For evaluation of growth performance of each generation, comparative growth trial was conducted using fingerlings from best selected group (A, B, C and D) with existing/local stocks of pangus with a stocking density of 80 fingerlings/decimal.

Achievement/Findings:

Through rotational breeding from wild stock of Thailand and Vietnam, genetically improved stocks of pangus breeds were developed and improved seeds of the pangus were disseminated at the field level. These seeds will ensure more yield and also prevent present deteriorated and inbreed problems of hatchery propagation in the country.
