Substitution of Brine and Artimia by Crude Salt and Live Feed for Prawn (macrobrachium Rosenbergii) Seed Production in Backyard Hatchery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

After a culture tenure of 41 days the result revealed that the retrieval rate of PL from cemented tank is 10%. This retrieval percentage seems to be very poor and economically not viable. On the other hand, in a culture tenure of 46 days, best SGR of 0.82% per day was obtained with commercial feed alone. While there was no differences between the SGR of 0.58% and 0 67% per day obtained with commercial feed, formulated feed and natural feed alone.

Objectives:

Refinement/development for the substitution of brine wholly or partially with the muddy crude salt from salt pan in the backyard golda hatchery; refinement/development of alternative technique of commercial artemia cysts by the production of moina rotifer & steady production of artemia naupli as live feed for prawn seed production in the backyard golda hatchery; to disseminate the technology to the farmers/hatchery operators regarding prawn seed production; to compare the technology developed regarding alteration of brine & artemia cyst in backyard hatchery with commercial one.

Methodology:

Culture of live feed Moina spp. and rotifer were carried out in 20 m² concrete tank using rice bran, urea, TSP, potash, lime and dry yeast. Moina and rotifer were collected from pond with 90-150 micron filter net and isolated under microscope/micropipette. A bio-filter system was established using 12-15 ppt sea water and Artemia naupli was stocked @ 10,000/l. Berried female of golda (M. rosenbergii) with grayish eggs were kept in mud tank having 6 ppt brackishwater. PL produced through backyard hatchery system were reared in chari containing 200 L 12 ppt brackishwater. The PL were fed with Artemia two times for the first 10 days. After 10 days they were fed with formulated feed.

Achievement/Findings:

The seed production system of M. rosenbergii in the backyard hatchery has been developed by BFRI is now well suited in small scale farmers field. Although larvae rearing techniques using costly Artemia could be substitute by other means.
