The experiment has conducted to to investigate the effect of aqueous 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP)and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP)on the shelf life and quality of harvested litchi fruit. Litchi fruits at commercial mature stage were fully immersed in aqueous 1-MCP at 200, 400, 600 and 100µgL-1 for 5 minutes, quickly removed the water from fruit surface by fan and then stored in 0.5% perforated polypropylene packets at 5 degree C and 90-95% relative humidity. 1-MCP treatment in combination with MAP delayed pericarp browning and fruit fruit softening and thus extended shelf life. The changes in fruit TSS, ascorbic acid, total acid contents and surface color of the fruit treated at two higher levels of 1-MCP remained strongly suppressed and consequently extended at least 20 days extra storage life compared to control fruit. Thus post harvest application of 1-MCP at 600 micro gram per liter in combination with the use of MAP can extend the storage life of litchi up to 20 days.

•Increasing the shelf life of litchi by combined application of 1-MCP and MA packaging •Estimating the physico-chemical parameters (weight loss, fruit colour, firmness, vitamin A & C, percentage decay percentage, shelf life) of litchi stored in MA packaging
Commercial matured litchi 'Bombay' obtained from local growers field of Ishwardi, Pabna, were divided into groups. The fruits were then sorted for freedom from visual defects, uniformity of developmental stage, weight and size, and then randomly divided into 5 treatment groups. Five groups of of 50 fruit each were treated with aqueous 1-MCP. Solutions were prepared with 1-MCP powder at 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 micro gram per liter. Quantities of powder containing desire levels of active ingredient were suspended in 10 liter of distilled water in 25 liter plastic buckets. Five minutes after preparation, each groups of litchi were immersed in the solution for 5 min, and all treatments were completed within 30 min. One group of litchi dipped in blank distilled water for 5 min were used as control. After dipping, water from the fruits were quickly drained and dried the surface water with air. The fruits were then placed into 0.5% perforated low density polyethylene bags (0.03mm thick)and each bag contained 50 fruits. After that the treated fruits were transferred to storage at 5±2 degree C and 90-95% RH. The experiment was laid out in CRD with five replication. Data on the changes in different physico- chemical attributes during storage were collected at every four days interval. Litchi external colour was evaluated with a Chroma Meter (Model CR-400, Minolta Corp., Japan). Vitamin C and ß-carotene content was determined. Vitamin C were conducted according to Ranganna (1986) and ß-carotene content was measured by spectrophotometer (T-80, PG Instrument Ltd., UK) at 451ηm (Alasalvar et al., 2005). Again, total soluble solids estimated using a digital refractometer (Model NR151), and titratable acidity expressed as citric acid (%) was determined by titration according to the method by Ranganna (1986).

In terms of delaying litchi fruit browning and senescence, results of the present study reveals that 1-MCP and MAP can be an effective anti browning means for their prolonged storage. The changes occurred during browning and senescence, such as peel color and fruit softening were markedly delayed, illustrating potential for commercial control of litchi fruit storage. Post harvest application of 1-MCP with MAP on mature litchi fruits delayed the browning and senescence and prolonged storage life up to 24 days at 5±2 degree C and 90-95% RH retaining desirable color, texture and quality. The experiment will be continued for the next year for further improvement.
