Evaluation of Meat Production Potentiality of Hilly Chicken

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred and eight day old chicks of native chicken of hilly areas of Bangladesh were studied for 10 weeks of age to compare their growth and feed efficiency under two feeding levels. The feeding levels were 22.23% CP and 3153 Kcal/kg ME; and 19.35% CP and 2964 Kcal/kg ME. The body weight of the birds at 8 and 10 weeks of age were 699 and 492; and 937 and 759 g respectively. The per bird feed consumption were 1802 and 1483; and 2622 and 2351 g and the corresponding feed conversion rate were 2.69 and 3.20; and 2.89 and 3.22. The mortality of the birds were 1.85 and 0; and 1.85 and 1.85 percent. It may be concluded that native chicken of hilly areas have potentiality for meat production and can utilize high protein and high energy diet more efficiently.

Objectives:

1) To know the growth of hilly chicken up to 10 weeks of age under two feeding levels. 2) To determine the feed efficiency.

Methodology:

Hatchings eggs were collected from the hilly chicken flocks reared at Naikhonchari regional station and BLRI Head Quarter. The eggs were hatched in BLRI hatchery. One hundred and eight healthy day old chicks were identified by wing band and placed randomly in 6 different cages of battery brooders as 18 chicks in catch cage. Two different types of feed containing 22.23% CP and 3153 Kcal/kg ME as higher protein energy diet; and 19.35% CP and 2964 Kcal/kg ME as lower protein energy diet were randomly allotted in 6 cages. The experimental design was one genotype (Hilly chicken) against two feed levels with three replications for each and there were 18 chicks in a replication. Feed were offered to the birds adlibitum. There was easy excess of fresh drinking water to the birds in continuous light. The living space in growing cage was 448 sq.cm/bird. A vaccination schedule was followed against New Castle, Gumbro and Fowl Pox diseases. Necessary hygienic measures were ensured for bio-security purposes. Data were analyzed by using T-test procedure of SPSS (11.5) in personal computer.

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of this study it is revealed that, Hilly chicken are fast growing native birds and can utilize higher protein energy diet more efficiently. It may be suggested that Hilly chicken can be improved further for meat production through collection and selective breeding programme. Profitability study of Hilly chicken may also be suggested as meat producing genotype.
