Relationship Between Rice Hispa Damage and Yield Loss

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the tested Aus varieties and aromatic T. Aman varieties and Boro varieties, BR15, BRRI dhan38 and BR12 have had been identified lower yield losses varieties respectively despite a considerable level of hispa damage. These varieties might be recommended for hispa prone areas in different seasons.Among the plant characteristics, plant height and stem weight were reduced by hispa damage in almost all the varieties. Leaf weight was affected only in some varieties. Yield contributing factors like panicle no./hill, filled grain no./hill and filled grain weight/hill were affected in almost all the varieties in all the seasons. However significant reduction in panicle no./hill occurred only in case of BRRI dhan27 in the Aus season. The impacts of these effects of hispa damage on plant and yield contributing characters resulted in the yield loss of different BRRI varieties.

Objectives:

To determine the yield loss of different BRRI varieties due to rice hispa damage in different seasons.

Methodology:

Yield loss of different BRRI varieties due to rice hispa damage was studied at BRRI farm Gazipur during Aus and T. Aman 2009 and Boro 2010 seasons. Four Aus varieties (BR6, BR7, BR15 and BRRI dhan27), four T. Aman varieties (BR 5, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38) and three Boro varieties (BR12, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan50) were included in the study. The varieties were grown in plots measuring 5×4m in size. The experiments were designed in RCB with 16 replications. Forty days after transplanting, four rice hills from each plot were covered by white nylon mesh nets and 20 pairs of adult hispa beetles were released in each cage. Similarly, another set of four hills from each of the same plots were also covered by same types of nets but without hispa beetles and were treated as control. The beetles were removed after incurring 60% leaf damage in all the seasons. The plant and yield contributing characters such as tiller number, plant height, stem and leaf weight, panicle number, filled grain number and weight were recorded.

In Aus 2009, highest yield loss occurred in BR6 (24.64%) and the lowest in BR15 (12.62%). Among the plant and yield contributing characters plant height, stem weights reduced due to hispa damage for all the varieties. The Leaf weight also reduced in BR 15 and BRRI dhan27 but no significant difference was observed in BR 6 and BR 7. The filled grain number per hill reduced in BR6 and BR7 but no significant differences was found in BR15 and BRRI dhan27. Incase of filled grain weight per hill significantly reduced in all the varieties except BRRI dhan27. Highest yield loss occurred in BRRI dhan34 (24.62%) and the lowest in BRRI dhan38 (9.34%) during T. Aman 2009 season. Panicle number per hill, stem weight, filled grain number per hill and filled grain weight per hill were found reduced for all the varieties due to hispa damage. Plant height also reduced in all the varieties except BRRI dhan37. Leaf weight reduced in BR5 and BRRI dhan37 but no significant difference was found in BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan38. BRRI dhan36 and BR12 showed the highest (45.90%) and the lowest (31.97) yield loss respectively, for the same level of damage incurred by hispa in Boro 2010. Plant height, stem weight, filled grain no. per hill, filled grain weight reduced due to hispa damage for all the test varieties. Panicle number and leaf weight per hill also reduced in all the varieties except BR12.
