Evaluation of Commercial Insecticides Against Major Insect Pest of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 111 insecticides (65 against brown planthopper, 27 against rice hispa and 19 against yellow stem borer) were found effective out of 137 candidate insecticides tested in the year 2009-2010.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of different commercial formulations of insecticide against major insect pests of rice

Methodology:

For Brown Planthopper (BPH) and Rice Hispa (RH)Trial: The field trial was conducted in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 replications. A large rice field divided into unit plots. Each plots measuring 4mX5m (20 m²) and the variety was BR3. In each unit plot a test insecticide was applied with standard doses and four hills were selected randomly from each plots. Each hill represented a replication. One hour after spraying of test insecticides, ten 3rd-4th instar BPH nymphs/RH adults of greenhouse populations were confined by mylar film cages on each of four randomly selected rice hills. Another plot of same size was used as control without insecticide. in each replication. Four hills were also selected randomly from the control plots and same number of test insects were confined with the same procedure. The granular insecticides were broadcasted one day before infestation. Mortality of insects was counted both from treated and untreated plots at 24 and 48 hours after treatment (HAT) and the results were adjusted by Abbott's formula. For Yellow Stemborer (YSB) Trial: The the field lay-out and unit plot size was similar to as described above. Four randomly selected rice hills/plot were separately infested with the 1st instar larvae emerging from one egg mass. Test insecticides were applied after one to two hours of infestation. The same plants were infested again with new larvae at 48 hrs of spraying or broadcasting. Another plot of same size in each replication was used as control without applying of any insecticide. The dead hearts were counted at 15 to 20 days after insecticide application both from infested and control plots. Percent dead heart reduction over control was estimated by using the formula of Gomez (1994).

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 137 insecticides of which 74 against BPH, 34 against YSB and 29 against rice hispa were evaluated during the reporting year. Sixty five insecticides (16 in Aus, 23 in Aman and 26 in Boro season) (showing more than 80% mortality) against BPH 27 insecticides (9 in Aus, 7 in Aman and 11 in Boro season) against rice hispa and 19 insecticides (4 in Aus, 11 in Aman and 4 in Boro season) against yellow stemborer (reduced deadheart 80% or above) were found effective in the trials conducted during the year.
