Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence in Light Trap

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The light trap catch of rice insect pests was found the highest at Gazipur than those of the other stations. Green leafhopper (GLH), white leafhopper (WLH), zigzag leafhopper (ZLH), brown planthopper (BPH), white backed planthopper (WBPH), yellow stemborer (YSB) and long horned cricket (LHC) were the dominant ones among the pests observed in light traps. BPH population was high at all the stations in November. The highest population of yellow stemborer (YSB) was observed at Barisal in November. The natural enemy population, found in light trap was the highest at Gazipur. However, that of Rajshahi didn’t show much variation in terms of numbers. Lady bird beetle (LBB) and carabid beetle (CBD) at Rajshahi and staphylinid beetle (STPD) and green mired bug (GMB) at Gazipur dominated the natural enemy population respectively. Barisal showed considerably higher population of GMB.

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in light trap and to create a database.

Methodology:

Rice insect pests and their natural enemies were monitored throughout the year by light trap from July 2009 to June 2010 at BRRI headquarter, Gazipur and BRRI regional stations at Comilla, Habiganj, Barisal and Rajshahi. Pest and natural enemies samples were collected and their number were recorded daily in the laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

The total number of insect pests was the highest at Gazipur and followed by Barisal, Rajshahi, Habiganj and Comilla. The abundance of GLH, WLH, ZLH, BPH, WBPH, YSB and LHC was observed at all the five locations. The highest number of GLH, BPH and LHC was observed during the month of November at Gazipur. GLH had an additional peak in April at Habiganj. BPH showed higher populations in November at all the stations and the 2nd highest catch was observed at Barisal. The highest peak of YSB was observed at Barisal in the month of November. Unlike other years and other stations, stemborer population showed 3 unusual peaks in this year. Usually stemborer shows two peaks in a year- one in April-May and the other in the month of October-November. The stemborer population of Barisal of this year showed two additional small peaks in February and June respectively, which completely differed from that of the other stations. However, the 3rd peak the biggest peak was similar to those of the other stations and was observed in November like the other years. This needs careful investigation. The light trap catch showed higher population of YSB at Gazipur and Rajshahi. RLR incidence was found higher in November at Barisal. The highest catch of natural enemies in light trap was recorded at Gazipur, which was almost similar to that of Rajshahi. The natural enemy population found from light trap catch didn’t show much variation in numbers observed at Comilla, Habiganj and Barisal, however, GMB population of Barisal was noticeably higher than those of the 3 stations. LBB, CDB, STPD, GMB dominated the predator population at all the locations. The highest peak of LBB was observed at Rajshahi in the month of May and the population remained considerably high in August, September and October than that observed at other stations. The CDB population also showed the same trend as was observed for LBB at Rajshahi. Both the population of LBB and CDB were much higher than those found at other stations. There were two peaks of GMB population at Gazipur during July and November respectively. STPD was the dominating predator of Rajshahi during the month of March.
