Improvement of Different Color Mutations of Quail for Meat Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

With a view to produce the relatively heavier quails for higher meat yield, the Wild Japanese quail and the BB-White and BB-Dhakaya, the recently isolated color mutations of Japanese quail available at BAU and BLRI Poultry Facilities, were selectively inbred for higher body weight (BW). Results revealed that all mutations were statically equal for their performances before selection except for hen-housed egg production. Selective breeding had no significant (p>0.05) effect on the parameters measured except the egg weight and the rate of fertility. The egg weight became higher became higher (p<0.05) in all of the selected birds. The rate of fertility in BB-White mutation found to be lower (p<0.05) after selective breeding. However, a clear tendency of increasing (p<0.05) the 6th week BW and the age at first egg were noticed in the selected lines of all mutations the rate of fertility, hatchability and mortality in the selected lines were tended to be lower (>0.05) in all selected lines compared to their unselected counterparts. However, a trend of improvement in the 6th week BW, the most desired character, and the remarkable increase in egg weight coupled with a slight reduction in the mortality rate at selected lines suggested the possibility of producing heavier quail by further selective breeding but some modifications might be needed in management procedures along with increasing the number of quails per pen.

Methodology:

The Wild Type, BB-white and BB-Dhakaya were used in this study. The rate of mortality, BW, age at first egg, egg production, egg weight, fertility and hatchability in the selected and unselected lines at generation one (G1) were recorded and compared. The growing chicks of the base population (G0) and G1 generation were reared in separate brooding coops (30 chicks/coop) up to 6th week of age. After 6 week, to form the selected and unselected lines, 64 quails (48 Ü and 16 Ý) per lines were chosen from the separately reared not less than 900 quails (50% Ü and 50% Ý) under a mutation at G0 population. The top 20% female and 5% male of G0 population in terms of BW were comprised the selected lines, whereas the similar proportions of males and females were chosen randomly from the G0 population to form the unselected lines. At 6 week of age, the quails were marked by numbered wing band and reared in 5-tier battery cages keeping 6 Ü and Ý in each pen. All birds were fed on quail starter diet up first 6th weeks of age and the laying quail diet was supplied to the bird till the end of the experiment. All the birds under different mutations were allowed for same the amount and quality feeds with free access to safe drinking water ad libitum. The significant effects of selection on the means of single traits as well as on I value of three significant effects of selection on the means of single traits as well as on I value of three mutations were tested using the Student’s t-tests and General Analysis of Variance in Genstat 5 (Rothamsted Experimental Station, 1997) statistical package. The level of significance was considered at p <0.05.
