Field Validation of Selected High Valued Fish Culture Technologies for Maximizing Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two selected high valued fish culture technologies viz. culture of shing (H. fossilis) and culture of koi (A. testudineus) were validated in 8 farmer's pond at Shirajgonj Sadar, Belkuchi and Tangail Sadar. Fry of Shing (H. fossilis) were stocked at the stocking density of 125,000/ha. The mean initial weight of shing (H. fossilis) in Shirajgonj and Tangail were 2.5±0.41 and 2.6±0.49g, respectively. Fishes were fed with supplementary feed containing 35% crude protein. After six months, the mean harvesting weight of shing in Shirajgonj and Tangail were 73.00±4.01 and 65.00±4.47g, respectively. The production achieved from the ponds of Shirajgonj and Tangail were 7.75 and 6.90 MT/ha, respectively. In another trial, Koi (A. testudineus) culture technology was validated in four ponds. Fry were stocked at the stocking density of 125,000/ha. The mean initial weight of koi fry (A. testudineus) in Shirajgonj and Tangail were 1.3±0.31 and 1.38±0.35g, respectively. Supplementary feed were supplied regularly to the fishes. The harvesting mean weight of ponds of Shirajgonj and Tangail were 90.00±8.11 and 86.00±8.60g, respectively. The mean weight of koi in Shirajgonj was higher than that of Tangail. The production of koi in Shirajgonj and Tangail were 10.13 and 9.14 MT/ha/4 months, respectively.

Objectives:

To validate the production technologies of Shing, Gulsha, Pabda & Koi different stocking densities; to standardize and/ or adjustment of technologies, if any, in varying conditions of environment and culture practice; and to analyze the benefit-cost ratio.

Methodology:

BFRI evolved technologies like gulsha and pabda culture were validated in 6 farmer's pond at Tangail Sadar, Sirajgonj Sadar and Belkuchi. After proper pond treatment, fry of gulsha and pabda were stocked at the stocking density of 75,000 and 37,500/ha, respectively. Fishes were fed at a rate of 5-20% of body weight with supplementary feed (35% crude protein). Water quality parameters such as water temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) and total alkalinity were analyzed at ten days interval between 0900 to 1000 hrs. After seven months rearing, fish were harvested by repeated seine netting. Total bulk weight and number of fish from each pond were recorded. Survival and gross production of fish of each pond was also estimated. Similarly, shing (H. fossilis) with koi (A. testudineus) was stocked @ 75,000/ha, while fry of koi was stocked @125,000/ha in farmer ponds for validation.

Achievement/Findings:

These technologies are cost effective and can be managed by rural farmers. However, the wide scale transfer and sustainable adoption of these technologies require extensive field testing for refinement and standardization. Therefore, continuous refinement and standardization of technologies, to suit with changing local conditions, should have been done through continuous field level testing. Besides, such research demonstrations are also required for creating awareness among the rural farmers and for technology transfer. BFRI evolved high valued fish culture technologies were popularized in the experimental sites. The process will improve farmers overall socio-economic and nutritional conditions.
