The experiment was conducted in two PDTTP sites to compare the performance of locally designed non-electric chick brooding devices using available non- conventional fuel materials under small scale farmers condition. The brooding devices were drum type brooder (DTB) with saw dust as fuel materials; bulti made brooder (BMB-1) with pit coal as fuel materials; bulti made brooder (BMB-2) with coli lukry as fuel materials. The maximum temperature inside the chick brooder guard of DTB, BMB-1 and BMB-2 was 34, 30 and 36?; total heating period in single filling of fuel materials was 8, 2 and 4 hours by burning 12, 8 and 2 kgs of fuel materials; smoke emission was low (+), high (+++) and medium (++) and the initial materials and fabrication cost of each brooder was 500, 300 and 300 taka respectively. Thr drum type brooder (DTB) found best performer for longest burning period by single filling of fuel materials and low smoke emission. The DTB was further modified during trial period to make the device more efficient, economic and convenient. The modified DTB produced heat up to 40?; the burning period by single filling of fuel materials was taka 2000 and can brood 1000 chicks by burning saw dust of cost Tk. 200 per week. It may be concluded that drum type brooder (DTB) using saw dust as fuel was most suitable under rural condition in respect to prolong burning hours from single filling of saw dust, more heat generation, less smoke emission, low operational cost and easy handling. Repeated trials and validation of the results in large number of farmer’s field is suggested.

To observe the performance of BLRI (Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute) developed chick brooding devices under farmer’s condition in TDA locations of PTDDP.

The study was conducted in Dhamrai, Dhaka and Sunaimuri, Noakhali the two TDA locations of PTDDP. One farmer from each TDA was selected on the basis of their interest to perform the trial. In the trial, two types of special designed local made utensils e. g. (i) Drum (local name) type brooder (DTB) made with plain sheet having a height of 18 inch. and diameter 15 inch. (ii) Buli (local name) made brooder (BMB) having 14 inch for both the height and diameter were used as burning devices where 3 types of fuel materials were used for heat generation of the brooding system e.g. saw dust, coil lukry made from rice husk and used pit coal (residual fuel materials of the brick kline). DTB was designed for saw dust and BMB was designed for pit coal and coil lukry. The trial was perform with the brooding of 500 broiler chicks in each TDA during winter (December-February) using two types of devices i. DTB with saw dust ii. BMB with pit coal and coil lukry, where BMB using coil lukry was common for both TDA. The fermers were demonstrated on the operation of the devices several times before starting of brooding of the chicks. Locally available commercial broiler feed were supplied to the birds on adlibitum basis. Fresh and clean water were supplied at all the time to the birds. Herikane (indigenous lamp) were used as a sources of light for the birds during night. Hygienic management and proper vaccination of the birds were undertaken during the experimental period. Brooding temperatures were recorded as ? with the help of thermometer before sunrise from the middle part of the brooder at the level of the back of the chicks up to 2nd weeks and then as in room temperature, quantity of fuel materials (kg) required per day, frequency of fuel materials need to add into brooder ( in numbers), maximum burning period of the fuel materials put in the brooder (hour), smoke emission (intensity) and performance of the birds e.g. body weight (kg), feed intake (kg) mortality (if any), income and expenditure (Tk) were recorded during the trial. However, observations also made regarding merits and demerits of handling the devices with the view to make the device more efficient, economic and convenient for the users.

From the results and observing on field trial the drum type brooder using saw dust could be the most suitable chick brooding system under rural condition in respect to maximum burning hour, more heat generation, less smoke emission, low operational cost and easy handling. However, to make the device more effective and its easy use by the poultry farmers further trial and validation of the results in farmer’s condition is necessary.
