Effect of Zero Tillage and Bed Planting Methods on Water Use for Wheat Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out to determine the irrigation scheduling on the basis of cumulative pan evaporation (CPE). Irrigation water was applied to wheat using IW: CPE ratios of 0.60, 0.85 and 1.10 applied at 17- 21 DAS, 45-50 DAS and 75-80 DAS, respectively. The study was carried out at Wheat Research Centre (WRC), Nashipur, Dinajpur. It was found that tillage was the minimum but maximum grain of wheat was responsive to optimum irrigation as well as irrigation at IW: CPE of 0. 85 and 1.10 level of three and two time’s irrigation, respectively. A total of 217and 201mm seasonal water use at IW: CPE of 0.85 and 1.10 application three and two time’s irrigation was used in maximum wheat yield under zero tillage method, respectively. But 224 and 209 mm seasonal water at IW: CPE of 0.85 and 1.10 applied three and two time’s irrigation was used in maximum wheat yield under bed planting method, respectively.

Objectives:

The specific objectives are ; (i) to determine the irrigation schedule on cumulative pan evaporation method,(ii) to determine the seasonal water use on zero tillage and bed planting method, (iii) to determine the effects of tillage on crop yields, (iv) to determine the effects of irrigation schedule on crop yield

Methodology:

The study was conducted during the rabi season of 2007-08 at WRC, Nashipur, Dinajpur. The field experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with a Strip- split plots with 3 replications. Irrigation schedule was taken to confirm with BARI recommended irrigation in the experimental plots. Treatment combination comprised of 3 levels of irrigation cutting off during wheat growth stages at I₁ (17-21 DAS), I₂ (17-21 DAS + 45-50 DAS) and I₃ (17-21 DAS + 45-50 DAS + 75-80 DAS). Irrigation scheduling and application rates of each irrigation water for wheat based on cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) at IW: CPE ratios of 0.60, 0.85, 1.10 and adjusted for rainfall. Daily pan evaporation was recorded from the standard ‘USWB class A’ pan. For bed planting, land preparation was carried out by the use of a disc harrow and tractor operated rotavator. The high yielding variety, BARI gom-24 (Pradip) was sown on November 28, 2007 in lines 20 cm apart, with the help of power tiller operated zero seed drill machine at the rate of 110 kg ha the planter ^-1 and 75 cm furrow to furrow in two lines apart per bed with help of tractor operated bed at the rate of 88 kgha^-1. Seeds were treated with the provax-200 @ 3 gm kg^-1 of seed. Fertilizers were applied with recommended doses in crop yields. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of N100+P26+K40+S20+B1 kg ha.^-1. At maturity, plots in 2 × 1 m for zero tillage and 2 × 1.5 m for bed planting on 27 March 2008 were harvested for grain. After threshed, cleaned, grain yields were recorded at 12% moisture content. Data were subjected to analysis of variance to sort out significant difference among treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum grain yield was found on the basis of cumulative pan evaporation at the ratios IW: CPE of 0.85 and 1.10 applied to three and two time's irrigation, respectively. Seasonal water use was less in zero tillage than bed planting method. The grain yield of wheat in that situation was more in zero tillage than bed planting method. Future study is required to investigate the effects of tillage, irrigation scheduling on cumulative pan evaporation with cut off irrigation on crop yield.
