Developmental Period of Different Trichogramma Species in Different Months

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The developmental periods of 5 species of the parasitoid, Trichogramma, were more or less similar having a shorter duration (8 days) during March-October and a longer period (12 days) in November to February of the year.

Objectives:

To determine the developmental period of different species of Trichogramma in different months of the year

Methodology:

Five Trichogramma species (viz. Trichogramma chilonis, T. c. matsumura, T. japonicum, Trichogramma sp and T. taidea bactrae) were reared on rice moth (Corcyra cephalonica) eggs in the laboratory. The trials were carried out from July 2008 to June 2009. A continuous culture of the rice moth was established on wheat flour to have a regular supply of rice moth eggs. Rice moth egg cards were made with 1.5 X 10 cm art paper pieces having a thin layer of non toxic gum (acacia spray dried powder) spread on one third of their length on one surface. About 200 rice meal moth eggs were spread evenly on the glued surface and allowed to dry for a few minutes. After drying, a single egg card was placed in a test tube having pre-emerged adults of Trichogramma spp. The adults were allowed to lay eggs on the C. cephalonica eggs for one night. When C. cephalonica eggs turned blackish within 3-5 days they were transferred to fresh test tubes and reared for the emergence of Trichogramma adults.

Achievement/Findings:

The developmental period (egg to adult) of the parasitoids during March to October was more or less similar (about 8 days) for all the species. The period increased gradually from November and reached its peak (about 12 days) in January and then started to decline sharply till March and steadily reached the lowest (7.86 to 8.0 days) in July. The developmental period found this year showed more or less the same trend as was observed in the previous years (highest period 12.6 to 14.09 days, lowest period 7.33 to 7.5 days).
