Evaluation of Different Trichogramma Species Parasitizing Rice Hispa Eggs

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the six species of Trichogramma, only Trichogramma zahiri parasitized hispa eggs. About 77% of hispa eggs were parasitized by the parasitoid.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effectiveness of different Trichogramma spp. in suppressing the rice hispa population.

Methodology:

Five Trichogramma species (viz Trichogramma chilonis, T. c. matsumura, T. japonicum, Trichogramma sp, T. zahari and T. taidea bactrae) were reared successfully on rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica eggs. A number of attempts were made to parasitize the rice hispa eggs using several techniques. Rice hispa adults were allowed to lay eggs on potted BR3 plants for a night. On the next morning, the beetles were removed from the plants. The pots were covered by mylar film cages. Freshly emerged adults of each parasitoid species (more than 50 in number) were released separately inside of the mylar cages containing hispa eggs. Both the end of the each mylar cages were kept rapped with two pieces of black cloths which helped aggregate Trichogramma in the middle portion of the cage where most of the rice hispa eggs remained. The top of the mylar cage were kept covered by fine mesh nylon net. After 24 hrs of Trichogramma release, all the mylar cages were removed. Rice leaves with parasitized hispa eggs were clipped and placed in test tubes for two weeks separately for each Tricogramma spp. Field collected Trichogramma zahiri was also used in the trial following the same procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the six Trichogramma spp. only T. zahiri parasitized the rice hispa eggs. Average parasitism rate of the parasitoid was 77% in control condition. The other five Trichogramm spp. could not parasitize the rice hispa eggs in the same condition.
