Study on the Aromatic Rice Milling Industries in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A project was carried out in collaboration with the ODA’s Crop Post Harvest Programme Country Framework Document for Bangladesh. There are about 25 large automatic (2 to 4 t/hr) 390 Chinese automatic (1.0-1.5 t/hr) and 100,000 Engelberg (0.5-2.0 t/hr) huller in Bangladesh of which about 5, 145, and 300, respectively, process aromatic rice. The milling yields of three prominent aromatic rice variety name chinigura, kalijira and kataribhog processed by large automatic rice mills ranged from 50.0-57.5, 50.0 and 50-58%, respectively. The Chinese automatic rice mills and engelberg huller mills gave comparatively better (55.0-60.0%) milling yield than that of large automatic mills irrespective of variety. The head rice obtained from the large Indian automatic and small Chinese automatic rice mills ranged from 82-97% and 78-96%, respectively. However, the head rice yielded by engelberg mills were 88.0-97.7%.

Objectives:

To undertake a survey of automatic and engelberg type mills in order to collect information on equipment, type and capacity of operation.

Methodology:

The research project was carried out in collaboration with the ODA’s Crop Post Harvest Programme Country Framework Document for Bangladesh in order to generate information on prevailing quality and price relationship for traditional aromatic variety of rice in Bangladesh and t bring together information for competing products on the world market in order to make a judgment on the ability of Bangladesh to enter the export trade for aromatic rice.

Achievement/Findings:

Export of aromatic rice will not hamper the overall grain production for domestic consumption because the aromatic paddy are grown in lands where other modern high yielding variety do not grow well. Product processing and export of aromatic rice is possible if adequate support is provided for production and processing and a marketing network is established throughout the country. Varietal mixture in paddy from 2-36% reduces the total milling yield to produce export quality of aromatic rice. Delayed harvesting, inadequate threshing and drying of paddy, poor storage conditions, and use of steel hullers cause high breakage. The population of Chinese origin rubber roll mills is increasing for processing aromatic paddy which results in a better quality product. Automatic rice mills having inbuilt dryer claimed to grain higher profit margin during the winter time.
