Effects of Neem Leaf and Seed Extract in Controlling Sugarcane Termites

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Kapasia, Gazipur to evaluate the effect of neem leaf and seed extract against termite population in sugarcane field. From the experiment results revealed that, in the month of April termite population was not significant from each other treatments. The highest (171.30) termite was found in control plot which was insignificant to Neem leaves extract 40 l ha-1 but significantly different from other treatments. The highest efficacy was found in Regent 3GR treated plot followed by Neem seed extract 60 l ha-1 treated plot. On the other hand in the month of June the highest number termite of 42.33 was found in the control plot which was significant to all other plot. Similarly highest (80.44%) efficacy was found in Regent 3GR treated plot followed by neem seed extract 60 l ha-1 treated plot. The highest number of tiller was found in neem leaves extract 8o l ha-1 but number of millable cane in Regent 3GR treated plot of (90.66 x103 ha-1) and yield was highest (96.11 t/ha) in neem seed extract 8o l ha-1.Therefore, it is concluded that termite population can be controlled effectively with neem leaves and seed extract without any hazardous to environment.

Objectives:

1. Identifying the effects of neem leaf and seed extract for controlling sugarcane termites.

2. Finding out suitable doses of neem leaf and seed extract.

Methodology:

In sugarcane field, the effect of neem leaf and seed extract against termite population was evaluated through conducted an experiment at Kapasia, Gazipur during 2008-09 cropping season following RCBD with three replications. Neem leaves and seed were grinded by blender then boiled 30 minutes by 1:10 for getting extract. The extract was used in thrice- one during planting and rest two months interval after planting. Data on termite population were collected two times- in Mid April and Mid July. The variety Isd 36 planted in 6mx5m plot. Line to line distance was 1m and plot to plot 2 m. Two eyed sett was prepared and placed in trenches. Then extracts were applied 40, 60 and 80 l/ha and then setts were covered with soil.

Achievement/Findings:

Termite population will be controlled effectively with neem leaf and seed extract. The research results will be used as an alternative to chemical insecticides for eco friendly cultivation of sugarcane.
