Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence at BRRI Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Green leafhopper (GLH), white leafhopper (WLH), grasshopper (GH), stemborer (SB) and the rice bug (RB) were major insect pests which dominated the pest population of this year. The pest population was comparatively higher in Aus and T. Aman seasons. The lady bird beetle (LBB), spider (SPD), damselfly, and carabid beetle (CDB) were the dominate natural enemy (NE) population and were comparatively higher in seed beds and rice fields

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in rice and to create a data base.

Methodology:

Rice insect pests, their natural enemy populations and crop damage intensities due to insect pests in five habitats (seedbed, rice ratoon, grass fallow, irrigated rice, and upland rice) were monitored weekly at BRRI farm, Gazipur. One hundred complete sweeps were made from each of the habitat and the collected pest and natural enemies were counted. In addition, the damage intensity inflicted by some major insect pests and their populations were also estimated from 20 randomly selected hills in each week.

Achievement/Findings:

The most abundant pests were green leafhopper (GLH) and grasshoppers (GH) in all the three seasons and in all habitats. The incidences of insect pests were found higher in Aus and T. Aman seasons. The population of GLH was higher in Aus seedbed. GH population occurred higher in number in seed bed of all seasons. Both the irrigated and upland rice of Aus season are with slightly higher population of GH. Grass fallow of T. Aman are also with same increased population of GH .The ratoon and grassy fallow fields of Boro season harboured GLH and WLH. The lady bird beetle (LBB) and spider (SPD) dominated the natural enemy population in all the habitats and in all the seasons. Like insect pests, the natural enemies also concentrated mostly in seedbed and rice fields in all the seasons. Weekly counts, taken directly from 20 hills, showed that population and the damage done by insect pests were below the ETL in all the three rice seasons. GLH and GH were the most abundant pests in hill counts. Damages caused by stem borer (SB), GH, LHC and whorl maggot (WM) were observed throughout the year. The damage due to SB was comparatively higher in T. Aman season. Among the predators LBB, SPD, CDB and damsel fly population were more abundant.
