Status of Poultry and Poultry Products Under Poultry Technology Development and Dissemination Project (ptddp).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 624 questionnaire were filled by direct interview to know the status of poultry and poultry products in 11 Technology Dissemination Areas (TDA’s) of PTDDP (Barisal, Bogra, Dhamrai, Dinajpur, Joypurhat, Khulna, Noakhalki, Sirajgong, Sylhet, Tangail and Chittagong). The results showed that 69.30% and 21.27% farmers sold their eggs and sick birds during the treatment period, drug cost involved 23% of the total rearing cost, 90.81% farmers used different drug in poultry feed, 59.13% farmers used drugs to compensate weather change, 44.61% farmers discussed Upazilla Livestock Officer and follow suggestion given by them while (26.19%) take decision by themselves in using drug. Before withdrawal period of antibacterial drug 71.45% farmers are marketed their products. Farmers collect their drug from feed supplier (28.92%) while 20.73% and 26.73% collect from market, marketing agent and medicine supplier respectively. 54.72% farmer’s use of disinfectant to clean vehicles before entering the farm, 57% farmers cleaned their eggs before marketing. On the other hand, 77% farmers used water to clean the egg, 40.4% farmers cleaned egg trays at 15-20 days interval, 35.3% farmers transported their broiler at morning, 29.2% at evening, 19.5% at afternoon and 8.1% at anytime whereas 28.9% used bamboo and 71.1% steel cages for transportation. 45% farmers used disinfectant before slaughter in dressing plant whereas 83% used bleaching powder and 17% soap for cleaning their dressing plant and 45% farmers use disinfectant for cleaning their slaughtering instrument. All farmers used normal dress and 26.7% use hand gloves during the processing of broiler on dressing plant, 100% farmers used hand sensation for measuring water temperature. 66.7% used 5 liter water in hot water dipping vat, 83.3% used tube well water, 65% farmers deepen 50 broilers using same hot water and 91% farmers change water of dipping vat twice daily. Farmer’s response was heterogeneous on almost all parameters and unscientific methods were practiced.

Objectives:

Know the status of using health hazard products in rearing poultry.

Methodology:

Preformed questionnaire were used for collection of information from poultry farmers, aratder and dressing plant operators to know the status of poultry and poultry products. The data were collected during the period of January to February 2010 by the Scientific Officer and Field Assistant in Poultry Technology Development and Dissemination Project (PTDDP). The primary data were collected by direct interview method from selected respondents. A total of 624 questionnaire were filled to know the status of poultry and poultry products from 11 Technology Dissemination Areas (TDA’s) of PTDDP (Barisal, Bogra, Dhamrai, Dinajpur, Joypurhat, Khulna, Noakhalki, Sirajgong, Sylhet, Tangail and Chittagong). The target of this program was to build-up awareness of safe poultry meat and egg for food safety.

Achievement/Findings:

This study shows heterogeneous results. Regarding poultry quality, farmers and dealers need to have training to create awareness about human hazards related to egg and broiler production.
