Performance Study of Rupali and Nageswari Duck Under Farmers' Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was being conducted to assess the productivity of BLRI development of Rupali and Nageswari ducks. A total of 140 day old Rupali and Nageswari ducklings were distributed among the 6 farmers of Kalihati Upazila. Rupali and Nageswari ducklings were hatched from existing breeding flock of the institute. Seventy local ducklings were collected from local farmers of study area and distributed to three other farmers to compare their productivity with Rupali and Nageswari ducks. After 12 weeks of age 2male and 10 female ducks were separated and allowed to scavenge in the beel throughout the day. Farmers were instructed to feed 50g of balanced feed to their ducks after coming back from the field in the evening. Data on: growth feed intake age at onset of lay, egg production rate, egg weight, mortality rate are being recorded. Average growth rate at 18th weeks of age of Rupali, Nageswari and desi ducks were 142 lg, 1422g and 1141g respectively and mortality was nil in Rupali ducks. However, the research is in progress.

Objectives:

Assessment of comparative performance performance of Ruapli and Nageswari ducks under farmers’ condition

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in Kalihati upazila and Tangail district in Bangladesh from April 2011. A total of 140 day old Rupali and Nageswari ducks was hatched from BLRI breeding stock and distributed among 6 farmers of Kalihati Upazila. Seventy local ducks were collected from existing farmers. The experiment had 3 treatments and each treatment group had 3 replications each replicate consist 22 ducklings for Rupali, Nageswari and local duck respectively. Local duck group was the control group. All birds received supplementary feed and in addition to normal scavenging feed. The experiment was designed CRD and data was analyzed SPSS computer program. Farmers were brooded their ducklings according to their own practice. Before distribution of duckling farmers were trained on improved feeding and hygienic management. Ducklings were vaccinated against Duck plague and Duck cholera. At the end of the brooding period the experimental bird was allowed to scavenge freely in the natural water body from 8.30 A. M to 4.30 P. M. After 12 weeks of age male and female duck were separated and only two drakes and 10 ducks are kept in each replication. The supplemented feed was divided in to two equal portions and was given twice daily at 7.30 A. M. and 5.30 P. M. Feed was supplied in the plastic bowl and the bowls were cleaned properly before each feeding. Sufficient clean drinking water was also produced in plastic bowls in each time.
