Nutrient Availability to Adult Pigeon Reared Under Semi Scavenging System in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To determine the availability of major nutrients to semi scavenging male and female pigeon in the rural areas of Bangladesh the study was conducted. A total of 40 adult pigeon; 20 male and 20 female pigeon purchased from farmers house at 5:30 to 6:30 pm were immediately slaughtered and kept in the freezer over night and in the morning gizzard and crop contents were collected and dried. These dried samples were analysis to compare nutrient availability semi scavenging male and female pigeon. There might be little difference in nutritional need between sexes. Despite smaller size the dressing yield of squab was fairly higher and relative breast: dark meat appeared to be unusually higher squab.

Objectives:

The samples were subjected to proximate analysis for the determination of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), nitrogen free extract (NFE), ash and metabolizable energy, Calcium (Ca) and Phosphate (P).

Achievement/Findings:

It is concluded that feeds in crop and gizzard of pigeon were different in CP, Ca, and P and higher in CF and Ash in composition with the recommendation of different feeding standards. The metabolizable energy was slightly higher than the requirement. Supplementary diet rich in CP, Ca, and P and low in CF could increase the performance of semi scavenging pigeon. The nutrient availability appeared to be similar in both males and females pigeon. There might be little difference in nutritional need between sexes. Despite smaller size, the dressing yield of squab was fairly higher. Relative breast: dark meat appeared to be unusually higher in squab.
