Study on 4 Genotypes for Meat Type Quail Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Birds of Japanese, white, black and brown quail varieties have been mobilized and multiplied to start the selective breeding programme attaching their individual identity to fed on diet containing 22% crude protein and 3000 kcal ME/kg. Birds with individual identity have been housed in an open sided house in cages to record their pedigree from this generation. The breeder males and females are being maintained in cages for single pair mating to study their comparative meat production capability of Japanese, white, black and brown quail varieties. Hatchability did not differ significantly among the varieties. White quail attained highest live weight gain (129.79g) followed by Brown (115.53g) and lowest in Japanese quail (109.47g). Total feed intake (640g) was higher and FCR was better in white quail (4.92) compared to other varieties. The mortality rate in Black varieties (16%) was significantly higher than that of the other varieties and lowest in Brown variety.

Objectives:

A program entitled “Development of meat type quail in Bangladesh” was conducted by BLRI and BAU jointly in 2010.A recommendation was formulated on the basis the outcome of the study; that white (BB white) and black (BB black) may further be studied to start as parent lines for the boiler quail production. Those two lines along with Japanese and Brown quail varieties are being conserved in BLRI. The objective of the study was to assess the comparative meat production capacity of Japanese, white, black and brown quail varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BLRI poultry farm, Savar during April 2012 to May 2012 using the Japanese, white, Brown and black quail varieties. Japanese and brown varieties were taken from the original base population of BLRI and white and black varieties were obtained from the foundation stock of BLRI-BAU (BB) joint quail research programme on meat type quail production. A total of 769 number 4 type quail were hatched out. Chicks were brooded in temperature control house on floor up to 4 weeks. Body weight, feed intake, survivability and disease occurrence were monitored during brooding and growing period. The growing quail chicks were reared an open sided house in cages. Birds of 4 varieties were included to start the selective breeding programme attaching their individual identity. Feed containing 22% crude protein and 3000 kcal ME/kg were fed up to 6 weeks. Birds with individual tag number have been housed in to record their pedigree from this generation. The breeder males and females are being maintained in cages for single pair mating that means one male and one female in single coop of colony cage. All data were analyzed using the SPSS computer software.

Achievement/Findings:

This is the report of 6 week of age of 4 quail varieties of foundation flock. Result so far obtained indicates that white quail variety may further be investigated to explore the possibility of developing a meat type quail variety considering its live weight gain and white feather colour.
