Optimization of Water Management Practices for Increased Productivity of Sugarcane.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The maximum yield of sugarcane variety was found 71.12 t ha-1 at irrigation treatment I4 where water use efficiency was 0.53 and number of irrigation was applied 5 (five). In case of maximum water use efficiency (0.56), irrigation was applied 3 nos. at treatment I2. Only 2 nos. of irrigation is more required at I4 than that of at I2, where yield was got 7 t ha-1 more than that of I2. It may be economically justified that selected sugarcane varieties can be irrigated at treatment I4.

Objectives:

(I) To find out judicious irrigation and drainage requirement for sugarcane;

(ii) To determine irrigation timing based on climate, crop and soil data;

(iii) To determine yield, yield components, draught sensitivity and water use efficiency subject to water stress.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted during the cropping season 2010-2011 in BSRI farm. The experiment was laid in split-plot design with four (4) irrigation treatments in the main plots and five (5) sugarcane varieties in the sub-plot.The budchip settlings were transplanted at a rate of 25000 settlings per hectare. The soil of the experimental field was loamy to sandy loam with PH value ranged from 7.57 to 7.70. a) Treatments; i) Factor A : Irrigation I1 = Live irrigation (2 nos) at 0 & 10-14 DAP I2 = I1 + (IW/CPE-R=0.5) I3 = I1 + (IW/CPE-R=0.75) I4 = I1 + (IW/CPE-R=1.0) (ii) Factor B : Variety V1 = Isd 34 V2 = Isd 35 V3 = Isd 36 V4 = Isd 37 V5 = Isd 38 b) Design : Split plot c) Replication : 3 (Three)

Achievement/Findings:

Maximum Crop water use efficiency was 0.56 (t/ha/cm) of 50% deficit irrigation at T2 (IW/CPE-R=0.5) where irrigation was applied 3 nos and yield was found 63.17 t ha-1 but maximum yield was found 71.12 t ha-1 of no water deficit condition at T4 treatment (IW/CPE-R=1.0) where irrigation was applied 5 nos, it is economically justified.
