Breeder Seed Production.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Breeder seed is important to maintain the purity and use as foundation and certified seed. Objective of this study was to produce breeder seed of BRRI released varieties for supplying GO, NGOs, PS and other seed producing organizations. Total 25 varieties were grown as breeder seeds. Each variety was sown from nucleus stock using intact in Gazipur and broadcast method in regional stations. A total of 3.76 tons of breeder seed from 15 varieties in T. Aman and 43.28 tons of seed (including 35.64 tons of seed passed the SCA standard as Breeder seed.

Objectives:

To produce breeder seed of BRRI released varieties for supplying GO, NGOs, PS and other seed producing organizations.

Methodology:

The following varieties were grown as breeder seed: T. Aman – Name of the variety- BR10, BR10, BR11, BR21, BR22, BR23, BR24, BR25, BRRI dhan27, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan38, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41, Nizersail. Boro- Name of the variety- BR3, BR14, BR326, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan35, BRRI dhan36. Each variety was sown from nucleus stock using intact in Gazipur and broadcast method in regional stations. During transplanting in T. Aman and Boro seasons, each variety was grown using single seedling per hill along with panicle to row method in Gazipur and normally in regional stations. Breeder seed is not usually produced in Aus season due to unfavorable weather conditions prevailing during the season. Fertilizer were applied @ 80:60:40 kg NPK/ha in T. Aman and @ 100:60:40 kg NPK/ha in Boro season along with gypsum @ 100 kg/ha, respectively. Rouging was done as when necessary. Panicles from standard plants for each variety were harvested, dried and kept separately as nucleus stock for the next year. The panicles were kept as intact for growing breeder seed in Gazipur, while remaining panicles for @ regional stations were kept after threshing. The plots were mass harvested to preliminary consider as breeder seed after getting field certificate from SCA. After harvested to seed of each variety were threshed, dried, cleaned separately and stored in polythin coated gunny bag in the seed remain viable at least for one year. The harvested seed than finally offered as a lot for getting the laboratory certificate along with ‘breeder seed tag’ from SAC.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 3.76 tons of breeder seed from 15 varieties in T. Aman and 43.28 tons of seed (including 35.64 tons of seed passed the SCA standard as Breeder seed and the rest 7.64 tons was not offered for seed testing due to discoloration and low germination at store this quality of seed may be used as TLS with BRRI tag) from nine varieties in Boro season were produced. On the other hand, a total of 1.49 tons of breeder seed from 15 varieties in T. Aman and 3.97 tons of breeder seed from seven varieties in Boro and 0.23 tons of breeders from 5 varieties in Aus were distributed during 2004-05 season. At present BRRI has been supplying breeder seed through the Rice Network to the partner organization for producing foundation seed and subsequently truthfully labeled seed, which could partly satisfy the increasing national demand of quality seed. More over, presently BADC produces foundation seed in one stage instead of two stages. Therefore, BRRI will need to produce more quantity of breeder seed in future.
