Effect of Different Concentrate Levels on Growth in Local Lamb (male) Under Semi-intensive Management System.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trial was conducted at farmer’s houses in Noakhali and Naogaon districts. Twenty local lambs about 9 months of age were selected from Noakhali and twenty local lambs about 7 month age were selected from Naogaon. In the experiment lambs were randomly allocated to four treatments: T₀ (without concentrate); T₁ (1.0% concentrate of body weight); T₂ (1.5% concentrate of body weight);and T₃ (2.0% concentrate of body weight) under semi-intensive management system. The concentrate comprises broken maize 73%; wheat bran 20%; mustard oil cake 5% and salt 1%. The calculated CP in mixed concentrate was 132.0g/kg. The animals were given concentrate at morning. The animals were grazed about 8 hours. The length of the trial was 70 days. The average final live weight of T₀, T₁, T₂ and T₃ group were 16.0, 17.9, 19.3 and 19.3 kg respectively in Noakhali and 8.4, 9.8, 10.6 and 10.9 kg respectively in Naogaon district. In the present study, the average daily live weight gain of T₂ lamb group in both Noakhali and Naogaon was significantly (p<0.05) higher than T₀ and T₁ group but not significant (p<0.05) with T₃ group. Body weight gains were similar in T₂ and T₃ group in both Noakhali and Naogaon. On the other hand, cost of concentrate feed per kg live weight gain was higher in T₃ group than T₂ group both Noakhali and Naogaon. S, it may be concluded that the supplementation of concentrate @ 1.5 body weight / day/ lamb under semi-intensive management system were beneficial in terms of increased weight gain.

Objectives:

To identify the optimum level of supplementation for better productivity of sheep under semi-intensive management system of rearing.

Methodology:

The trial was conducted at farmer’s houses in Noakhali and Naogaon districts. Twenty local lambs about 9 months of age were selected from Noakhali and twenty local lambs about 7 month age were selected from Naogaon. In the experiment 20 lambs were randomly allocated to four treatments with five replications. Four treatments were T₀ (without concentrate); T₁ (1.0% concentrate of body weight); T₂ (1.5% concentrate of body weight); and T₃ (2.0% concentrate of body weight) under semi-intensive management system. The concentrate comprises broken maize 73%; wheat bran 20%; mustard oil cake 5% and salt 1%. The calculated CP in mixed concentrate was 132.0g/kg. The animals were given concentrate at morning and were grazed 3.5 hours at morning and 2.5 hours at afternoon. The length of the trial was 70 days. The same design was followed in both Noakhali and Naogaon region. The supplied feed was recorded daily and body weight was recorded weekly. To obtain cost of concentrate feed per kg live weight gain, the expenditure of concentrate feed were calculated only. The data on body weight gain was analyzed by using univariate GLM procedure of SPSS 11.0 for Windows.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above results it may be concluded that the supplementation of concentrate @ 1.5% of body weight / day/ lamb under semi-intensive management system were beneficial in terms of increased weight gain and low cost of concentrate/ kg LWG.
