Phenotypic Characterization Fo Indigenous Buffalo in Some Selected Regions of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four buffalo concentrated areas, namely Sirajganj, Tangail, Rangpur and Jamalpur were selected for this study. A total of 120 buffalo raising farmers 30 from each region who have indigenous buffalo producing more than 1.5 liter milk/day was used to characterize on the basis of morphological traits and to evaluate the potentiality of indigenous buffalo in terms of productive traits. The average body length (131.10±5.9 inch) and heart girth (183.5±19.48 inch) was higher in Rangpur among the four regions. The average height at wither (126.0±4570 inch) was highest in Jamalpur. The cost color of dairy buffaloes ranged from light block to dark black color. The horn of buffaloes was spiral, curling and crescentic type. White tail switch were found in milking buffalo. Eye color of buffalo was generally black. The per day milk production, lactation length and lactation yield in Jamalpur region were higher (2.14±0.78 liter, 305±0.75 day and 652.70±224.99 liter respectively) than the buffalo of other regions.

Objectives:

a. To identify the Phenotype characterization of indigenous buffalo and some selected regions,

b. To utilize the native species to increase milk and meat supply for human consumption, and

c. To alleviate poverty through creation of employment.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Rangpur, Tangail, Sirajganj and Jamalpur region. The management system of dairy buffaloes varied depending upon the locality. In the Brahmaputra-Jamuna flood plain area (Rangpur, Jamalpur, Sirajganj and Tangail), they were found to be raised by the farmer individually. A total of 120 farmers, 30 from each region were selected who have indigenous buffalo producing more than 1.5 liter milk/day. The data on two productive parameters viz. milk production and lactation length were considered. The phenotypic characteristics considered were Coat color, Horn pattern, White mark and Eye color. Body length was measured as distance between pool and tail head or dock, immediately behind the wither, shoulder and forelegs, the heart girth was measured; height at withers was measured at vertical distance between the pastern joint and the point of withers. The morphometric characteristics were measured with the help of a measuring tape in inch. Data obtained from the four locations were organized, structured and analyzed by Computer Statistical Package to calculate mean and standard deviation.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded from the above findings that, the average body length and heart girth were higher in buffaloes of Rangpur among four regions but the average height at wither was higher in buffaloes of Jamalpur then other regions. At the same time, the average milk production and lactation length of indigenous buffalo, in Jamalpur region were found to be higher than the indigenous buffalo of other regions. This study is an ongoing and more animals and regions with be needed for accurate justification of the results. Molecular study would also be conducted for characterization and documentation of valuable native buffalo genetic resources of the study.
