Developmental Period of Different Trichogramma Species in Different Months

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five Trichogramma species (viz. Trichogramma chilonis, T. c. matsumura, T. japonicum, Trichogramma sp, and T. taidea bactrae) were reared on the Corcyra cephalonica eggs in the parasitoid rearing laboratory of Entomology Division of BRRI and found that the developmental period of different species of Trichogramma was the longest (13 to 14 days) in January and shortest (7 to 8 days) July.

Objectives:

To determine the developmental period of different species of Trichogramma in different months of the year.

Methodology:

Five Trichogramma species (viz. Trichogramma chilonis, T. c. matsumura, T. japonicum, Trichogramma sp, and T. taidea bactrae) received from SPPS DANIDA project were reared on Rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica eggs in the laboratory for determining their developmental period. The trials were carried out from July 2007 to June 2008. A continuous culture of the rice moth was established on wheat flour to supply eggs regularly for Trichogramma rearing. Rice moth egg cards were made with 1.5 X 10 cm art paper and a thin layer of non toxic gum was spread on one third of their length on one surface. About 200 rice meal moth eggs were spread evenly on the gum and allowed to dry for a few minutes. After drying, a single egg card was placed in a test tube with pre-emerged adults of a single Trichogramma sp. The adults were allowed to lay eggs on the C. cephalonica eggs for one night. When C. cephalonica eggs turned blackish within 3-5 days they were transferred to fresh test tubes and reared for emergence of Trichogramma adults.

Achievement/Findings:

Developmental period (egg to adult) from March to October were more or less similar (7-8 days) for all the species. The developmental period increased gradually from December and reached its peak (12.6 - 14.09 days) in January and then started to decline sharply till March and steadily reached the lowest (7.28 to 7.63 days) in July. The developmental period found this year showed the same trend as was observed in the last year (highest period 13.95 to 14.5 days, lowest period 7.33 to 7.5 days).
