Relationship Between Rice Hispa Damage and Yield Loss

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Relationship between rice hispa damage and yield loss study were conducted during T. Aman and Boro seasons at BRRI farm and found that among the T. Aman varieties BRRI dhan31 and BR4 suffered lower yield losses 17.20% and 18.39% respectively due to rice hispa damage. BR19 showed lower yield loss (28.04%) than those of other Boro varieties.

Objectives:

To determine the yield loss of different BRRI varieties due to rice hispa damage in different seasons.

Methodology:

Yield loss of different BRRI varieties due to rice hispa damage was studied at BRRI farm Gazipur during T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2008 seasons. Five T. Aman rice varieties (BR 4, BR10, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan32) and four Boro varieties (BR18, BR19, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan47) were included in the study. The varieties were grown in plots of 5m X 4m. The experiments were designed in RCB with 16 replications. Forty days after transplanting four rice hills from each plot were covered by white nylon mesh nets and 20 pairs of adult hispa beetles were released in each cage. Similarly, another four hills from the same plot were also covered without hispa beetles and treated as control. The beetles were removed after incurring 60% leaf damage in both the seasons. The plant and yield contributing characters such as tiller number, plant height, stem and leaf weight, panicle number and length, filled grain number and weight were recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

In T. Aman 2007 yield losses ranged from 17.20 - 31.22%. The highest yield loss occurred in BRRI dhan32 (31.22%) and lowest in BRRI dhan31 (17.20%). Among the plant and yield contributing characters plant height, filled grain number/hill and filled grain weight/hill were reduced due to hispa damage for all the varieties. Leaf weight and stem weight/hill were also reduced in all the varieties except BRRI dhan31. The interactions of this reduction in plant and yield contributing characters ultimately caused reduction in yield for the varieties. In Boro 2008, yield losses ranged from 28.04-30.70%. The yield losses were found more or less similar (31%) in BR18, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan47. A lower yield reduction was found with BR19 (28.04%). The plant characters and yield contributing characters plant height, leaf weight, stem weight, filled grain number per hill and filled grain weight per hill were significantly reduced in damaged plants in comparison to undamaged ones. No significant differences were observed among the treatments in panicle number per hill for all varieties in both the seasons. The impacts of the effects of hispa damage on plant and yield contributing characters resulted in the yield loss of the varieties.
