Evaluation of Commercial Insecticides Against Major Insect Pest of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 106 commercial formulations of insecticides were evaluated against Brown plant hopper (BPH), Rice hispa (RH) and Yellow stem borer (YSB) at BRRI farm Gazipur. Among them 59 formulations against BPH and 28 against RH (giving mortality 80% or above) and 8 against YSB (reducing dead heart 80% or above over control) were found effective.

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of different commercial formulations of insecticide against major insect pests of rice.

Methodology:

The experiments were laid out in a CRD with four replications and the individual plot size was 20m² (4m X 5m). One hour after spraying ten 3rd-4th instar Brown planthopper (BPH) nymphs/adult rice hispa (RH) beetle were confined by mylar film cage on each of four randomly selected rice hills in each plot. Each hill represented a replication. The granular insecticides were broadcasted one day before infestation. Mortality of insects were counted at 24 and 48 hours after treatment (HAT) and the data was adjusted by Abbott's formula. For yellow stemborer (YSB) trial, four randomly selected rice hills/plot were separately infested with 1st instar larvae emerged from an egg masses. One hour after release of larvae, insecticides were sprayed. Each hill represented a replication. One day after spraying larvae were released again in all selected hills. The dead hearts were counted 20 days after insecticides application.

Achievement/Findings:

Fifty one insecticides were found effective (gave more than 80% mortality) against BPH. Twenty eight insecticides (13 in Aus, 5 in T. Aman and 10 in Boro season) were found effective against rice hispa. Among the sixteen insecticides evaluated in T. Aman season, 8 were found effective against Yellow stemborer reducing deadheart 80% or above. These efeective insecticides were recommended for registration.
