Evaluation of Insecticidal Management of Yellow Stemborer Practiced by Farmers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The results of the two trials conducted in T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-08 season showed no significant difference in the level of stemborer infestation in respect of the treatments, which indicates that the farmers derive no benefit from the application of insecticides in minimizing the loss caused by stemborers. Insecticidal measure taken against stemborers was found ineffective in respect of infestation levels of the pest.

Objectives:

To evaluate the farmers' practice of controlling yellow stemborer by commonly used granular insecticide.

Methodology:

Two trials were carried out in two consecutive seasons (T Aman 2007 & Boro 08) at BRRI farm, Gazipur. BR3 seedlings were transplanted at 20 cm X 20 cm spacing in plots measuring 5m X 8m in size. There were five treatments viz. 1. Insecticide application at 15 days interval, 2. Insecticide application at 1st top dressing, 3. Insecticide application at 2nd top dressing, 4. Insecticide application at ETL and 5. Control (no insecticide). Each treatment had three replications. Both the experiments were laid out in RCB design. The plots were left exposed to natural infestation of the insect pests. Carbofuran 5G was used during the trials. Data on dead hearts (DH) at vegetative stage and white heads (WH) at reproductive stage from 20 randomly selected hills along the diagonals of each plot were collected.

Achievement/Findings:

During T. Aman season stemborer infestation at vegetative stage (34 DAT) was very low, but that increased substantially at maximum tillering stage (45 DAT) of the crop which reached or crossed the ETL level for stemborers irrespective of the treatments received by the plots. Comparatively lower infestation was observed in plots having insecticides at 15 days interval and that had ETL based application. However, no significant difference was found in the level of infestation in respect of the treatments. White head counts, observed at reproductive stage, also showed no significant difference in respect of the treatments. Although slightly higher infestation was noticed in plots receiving insecticides at 2nd top dressing and prophylactic application. In Boro season infestation level was below the ETL level at the primary tillering stage. Higher infestation was observed at the reproductive stage of the crop. The white head counts crossed the ETL level. Highest level of WH percent (6.81) was found in control (having no insecticides at all) plots. However, none of the treatments showed significant difference in the level of infestation (%WH) in respect of different insecticidal treatments. Prophylactic application of insecticides at 15 days interval failed to show any significant difference in the level of infestation in comparison to that of the control plots (having no insecticides).
