Test of Mahogany Oil Against Rice Hispa and Brown Planthopper

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four different concentrations of mahogony oil were tested against rice hispa and five concentrations of mahogany oil (1, 3, 5, 10 and 15%) with 0.01% emulsifier were tested against BPH under greenhouse condition and found that 15% concentration of mahogany oil gave maximum mortality of rice hispa (96.88%) at 72 hrs after application. The higher concentration like 10 and 15% were also more effective giving 94-100% mortality of BPH after 24 hrs after treatment (HAT).

Objectives:

To study the effectiveness of mahogany oil against rice hispa and brown planthopper.

Methodology:

Rice hispa: Four different concentrations of mahogony oil in water (1, 5, 10 and 15 % v/v) were tested against rice hispa and under greenhouse condition. To prepare the spray concentrations, mahogony oil was thoroughly mixed with required amount of water for each treatment. The mixture was shaked well before the spray without adding any emulsifier. Three hills of rice variety BR3 were planted in a pot of 20 cm dia at equal distances from hill to hill. The pots were covered by mylar cages at 45 DAT. Five pairs of adult rice hispa were released in each pot. After 24 hrs of insect release, the plants were sprayed by a hand sprayer. BPH: Five concentrations of mahogany oil (1, 3, 5, 10 and 15%) with 0.01% emulsifier were tested against BPH in greenhouse. To prepare the solution, mahogony oil (1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 % v/v) with 0.01% emulsifier was thoroughly mixed with required amount of water for each treatment. Three hills (5-6 tiller per hill) of BR3 plants were grown in a pot of 20 cm dia at equal distances from hill to hill. The pots were covered by mylar cages at 40 DAT. Ten BPH nymphs (3rd instar) were released in each pot in two methods. In one method, BPH nymphs were released 24 hrs before application of oil and in another method BPH released one hour after spray. The control pots were sprayed with plain water. The experiment was designed in CRD with 4 replications, considering each pot as a replication. The mortality data were adjusted by Abbott's formula.

Achievement/Findings:

The 15% concentration of mahogany oil gave maximum mortality (74.72%) against rice hispa at 24 hrs of application and reached to 96.88% at 72 hrs. The other concentrations caused 14.58 to 51.04% mortality at 72 hrs of applications. BPH released 24 hrs before application of different concentrations of mahogany oil showed that higher concentrations (5% and above) caused more than 80% mortality at 24 hrs after spray. The mortality increased slightly at 48 hrs after treatment (HAT). The 3% concentration and above gave 81.60-100.00% mortality at 48 hrs of treatment (HAT) when spray was made one hour before release of the BPH. The higher concentration like 10 and 15% were also more effective giving 94-100% mortality after 24 HAT.
