Pest and Natural Enemy Incidence at BRRI Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Green leafhopper (GLH), white leafhopper (WLH) grasshopper (GH), stem borer (SB), and Rice bug (RB) dominated the pest population of this year. The incidence of insect pests was comparatively higher in Aus and T. Aman season than that of Boro season. The damage done by insect pests remained below the ETL. Ladybird beetle (LBB), spider (SPD), damsel fly (Dam. fly), and carabid beetle (CDB) were the major natural enemies. They were abundant mostly in seedbed and rice fields in all the seasons.

Objectives:

To study the pest and their natural enemy incidence patterns in rice and to create a data base.

Methodology:

Populations of rice insect pests, their natural enemies and crop damage intensities in five habitats (seedbed, rice ratoon, grass fallow, irrigated rice, and upland rice) were monitored weekly at BRRI farm, Gazipur. From each habitat one hundred complete sweeps were made and the pest and natural enemies collected were counted. Damage intensity due to some major insect pests and their populations were also estimated from 20 randomly selected hills in each week.

Green leafhopper (GLH), white leafhopper (WLH), grasshoppers (GH), stem borer (SB), and rice bug (RB) were the most abundant pests and found in all three seasons. This year the incidence of insect pests were comparatively higher in Aus and T. Aman season than the Boro season. The population of GLH was comparatively higher in the Aus seedbed and transplanted Aman and Boro rice. GH population occurred higher in number in T. Aman seedbed. The ratoon and grassy fallow fields of all three seasons harboured a significant number of insect pests. Grass fallow in Aus season harboured a considerable number of GH population. Among the natural enemies Spider (SPD), damsel fly (Dam. fly), ladybird beetle (LBB) and carabid beetle (CDB) were the dominant predators in all the habitats and in all the seasons. The natural enemies were concentrated mostly in seedbed and rice fields in all the seasons. Direct hill count showed that population and the damage done by insect pests were below the ETL in all the three rice seasons. Rice hispa (RH), Rice leaffolder (RLF), GH and long horned cricket (LHC) damage was observed in all the three seasons. The damage due to stem borer (SB) was comparatively higher in T. Aman season. Among all the predators LBB, CDB, Damsel fly and spider population were more abundant.
